Older fans of the series that first aired in 1978 remember the Ewings, from patriarch Jock and sons J.R. and Bobby as the embodiment of the stereotypical Texas oilmen, down to the hats, string ties and boots.

During my years covering the oil business in Texas I discovered that most oil industry insiders in the Lone Star state didn?t take?kindly to the?harsh depiction of the people in their industry. But Texas and its traditional oil industry have always coexisted uneasily with biofuels such as corn-based ethanol and biodiesel. Texas Gov. Rick Perry got an electoral brush-off in Iowa last winter in part because three years earlier he had asked the federal government ? unsuccessfully ? to revise the federal renewable fuel standard that Perry said was driving up feed costs for Texas cattle producers.

Of late, the ethanol industry has taken to throwing the epithet ?Big Oil? around in defense of the Renewable Fuel Standard and what it sees as attacks on the foundation of the demand for biofuels.

If the new incarnation of ?Dallas? wins the same huge ratings that the original enjoyed, the program?s treatment of?alternative and renewable energy sources?beginning?Wednesday night could have the potential to swing a segment of the voting public.

June 04--Florida is open for business for companies or groups that want to set up units to provide their own insurance.

That was the message Friday, when Gov. Rick Scott joined with business leaders in Miami to tout a new law that encourages these self-insurance companies to set up in the Sunshine State.

Florida today hosts no captive insurers and faces stiff competition for them from dozens of states.

But a new law that takes effect July 1 boosts the state's competitiveness by modernizing rules and lowering capital requirements for captive insurance companies to set up in the state.

"We had antiquated laws, were bureaucratic and only allowed 'industrial' captives," not captive insurance firms for other types of companies or groups that self-insure, said Ivette Arango, a spokeswoman for the Beacon Council, the Miami-Dade economic development group that has championed the new law.

"Now, with the new law, we can compete. The companies can bring jobs to Florida and, by holding meetings here, can help our tourism and convention business," Arango said.

The new law requires captive insurers based in Florida to hold at least one annual board meeting in the state.

Nationwide, the big players in captive insurance are Vermont, Delaware, South Carolina, Hawaii, Missouri, Montana and the District of Columbia, media reports say.

Captive insurers based in those areas help fund government by paying licensing fees and premium taxes. They also create jobs and spend on business services such as managers, consultants and lawyers.

Vermont leads the country in hosting captive insurers, with more than 850 licensed there that handle more than $16 billion in premiums, according to a recent report in Florida Underwriter.

A lot of gamers (myself included) expected the company to announce a partnership with the growing cloud-gaming service OnLive, though unfortunately that isn?t the case. However, a deal has been made with the online service Gaikai, and for a very interesting purpose.

Sony is planning on using the could gaming service to allow streaming of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, finally allowing us to play our old favorites on the current generation. Initially, the service will have Sony?s first-party titles, and third-party developers will have the option of selling their old titles if they so choose.

Gaikai is already very well-established in the gaming industry, with partnerships formed with several big-name studios, such as WB Games, Electronic Arts, and Capcom. The cloud-gaming company has also recent made some deals with other companies such as Best Buy and of course, Facebook. While many think that allowing backwards compatibility this late in the PS3?s life doesn?t hold any significance, it proves that Sony really believes in the life of their system. It also allows them to test the ability to stream games directly to the console, which means we will probably be seeing a similar service available on the next-generation PlayStation.

The cloud bank to the east glowed red. Jean-Baptiste Chappe d'Auteroche had been living at his mountaintop observatory, avoiding contact with the superstitious townsfolk and instead looking to the skies. His lot, he'd surmised, was not to make inroads with the locals but rather, as a fellow French philosophe put it, to make "a communication of flying bridges, as it were, that reunite one continent with another and pursue all the tracks of the Sun."

Three days before, Chappe had pointed his nineteen-foot telescope at a solar eclipse, recording in his logbook the exact moment when the eclipse ended. His pendulum clock?which he'd previously set to noon when the sun reached its highest altitude in the sky?read 6:11 am and 4 seconds. He'd already calculated that the same solar eclipse would be visible in St. Petersburg as well. So when he later returned through Russia's capital city en route to Paris, Chappe could then compare notes with observers there. Since the eclipse ended at the same instant, whether seen from Tobolsk or St. Petersburg, the difference in time between these geographically separated measurements was exactly the difference in longitude between the locales. Chappe derived that Tobolsk was 65.8490 degrees east of the National Observatory in Paris. (Today, Chappe's longitude would be written as 68.1862 degrees east of the prime meridian, the British Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. By either standard, Chappe's error was an impressive 0.0719 degrees or 4.3 arc minutes?translating to 3 miles at Tobolsk's latitude.)

The night before the transit, all looked calm. "The sky was clear," Chappe recalled. "The sun sunk below the horizon free from all vapors. The mild glimmering of the twilight and the perfect stillness of the universe completed my satisfaction and added to the serenity of my mind."

By morning, however, the 4:30 sunrise had brought a dark veil. Clouds loitered. As the increasingly cloudy and sleepless night progressed, Chappe paced the observatory floor. His assistants, whom Chappe had woken earlier in the night, left their master alone?knowing they'd only be needed if clear skies returned. "I found myself relieved by their absence," Chappe wrote.

Soon after dawn, Chappe heard a commotion outside. Tobolsk's governor, the local archbishop, and some nobles had assembled at the new observatory to take in the heavenly spectacle. The first light of day shone upon the French visitor whose anxiety grew with each troubled glance at the clouded-over sky.

"The idea of returning to France, after a fruitless voyage, of having exposed myself in vain to a variety of dangers," he recalled, "[with every] expectation of success, which I was now deprived of by a cloud...threw me into such a situation as can only be felt."

Chappe had instructed his assistants to set up a tent outside the observatory with the secondary telescope. The arrangement provided all they'd need to view the transit?but still permit Chappe to perform his own delicate observations with the privacy he demanded.

As the dawn's blush gave way to early morning light, an easterly wind peeled back the top layers obscuring the sun. And with the increasing transparency, the mood both inside the observatory and in the nearby tent lightened. "The clouds began to exhibit a whitish color, which grew brighter at every instant," Chappe wrote. "A pleasing satisfaction diffused itself through all my frame and inspired me with a new kind of life."

To everyone's pleasant surprise, the residents of Tobolsk?so vocal in their opposition to the Frenchman's entourage weeks before?had shut themselves up in their houses and churches, some fearing God's imminent wrath. Today, the armed guards assigned to protect Chappe proved an unnecessary precaution. Chappe instead enlisted their help in moving his nineteen-foot telescope out onto the lawn.

A Family's Journey Through Adoption | Being Pregnant

Let?s just get this out of the way:

I?m not pregnant.

So then why am I back on Being Pregnant for Babble?

Well, here?s a little story:

Once upon a time (hang in there, it?s going to get better) there were two kids, Diana (12) and Sam (13) who met in 7th grade. Sam liked to set things on fire and Diana liked to wear high-water pants. They were friends.

Fast forward to high school where they both were significantly better dressed and looking, and best friends. Best friends that really liked each other. A lot.

So senior year they ?went out?. Right before Sam headed to the Marines following graduation he asked Diana to marry him. She said yes. And almost 2 years later, at 19 and 20, they were married.

The next 6 years brought war, PTSD, alcoholism, marriage counseling, moving, lots of deployments, and the question of if they ever wanted kids ? because Diana didn?t like to barf. (Oh, the irony of this?) Finally, they decided to look at adoption as a different choice. International, since both had traveled overseas and seen the living conditions there. They felt their hearts pull for that.

And right before they paid an agency to start, they decided to try to get pregnant ? and three weeks later they were. 8 very long, very sick months of hyperemesis later, Bella was born a few weeks early after 6 weeks of preterm labor and bedrest. They spent the next year trying to figure out why the child puked so much (severe reflux), and debating if they ever, ever wanted to do this again. As much as they loved her.

Nearly 2 years later, Diana was still on the fence. They brought up adoption again. And started to move forward. But in the midst of the research, found that they wanted to try again to see if this pregnancy would be different. So they took the plunge. And in January they were pregnant. In Februrary they found out they were expecting twins. In March they thought they were fraternal, April brought identical boys.

And in May, after 4 months of severe hyperemesis again, Diana?s water broke at 18 weeks and 5 days, and a week later she went into labor and had her boys, Julian and Preston. Much too early to live, although Preston hung in there for 2 hours like a champ.

Once again, they looked at each other through the tears and pain that they thought very well might break their hearts in two and wondered if they could ever do this again.

They decided that they could not for a long time ? to themselves, to Bella, to a child that might not live because of what had already happened twice. Because of incompetent cervixes and the life altering hyperemesis that would happen again. So knowing this, they did what had been on their hearts for 3 1/2 years. What they had researched and looked into for months at a time.

They chose an adoption agency so they could still expand their family. Never forgetting the two little boys they wanted so very much to be a part of it.

And yes, we are adopting!

From Korea, a little boy or girl (we don?t get to choose gender before the child is referred ? and we don?t want to anyway), between 7-18 months old. This was all chosen by our age, the state we live in, and desires for our family, because we had never really considered Korea but are excited to be a part of the process. In the next year or so we will fly to Seoul and get to pick up our son or daughter.

My hope is that by blogging through this journey, some of you that have wanted to do this but hesitated (probably for many of the same reasons we did) will come to see how this all works and that you don?t need to be perfect (because we?d be out) or rich (again, out) or even a lot older (I?m 28) to adopt internationally. That if this tug is placed on your heart, maybe our journey will give you the confidence to see where that feeling would take your family.

We are thrilled. I am thrilled to share it on here with all of you.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Friday the latest employment report shows that the economy is not creating jobs "as fast as we want," but he pledged that the economy will improve.

"We will come back stronger. We do have better days ahead," Obama said at a Golden Valley, Minn., Honeywell plant where the company has taken steps to hire veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The president was responding to the government's jobs report for May, which showed that only 69,000 jobs were added during the month. That was the fewest in a year, as the unemployment rate increased to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent in April.

Obama, in a tight re-election campaign against Republican Mitt Romney, said the economy still faces a number of challenges, including Europe's debt crisis and higher gas prices, which have hurt families.

"The economy still isn't where it needs to be," Obama said.

Romney told CNBC that Obama's economic policies had not worked and the new report was a "harsh indictment" of how the Democrat incumbent has steered the economy.

Obama later told donors at a Minneapolis fundraiser that the last four years had been "as tough a period in our country's history as anything in our lifetimes, certainly since the 1930s." He said his administration had tried to make "dogged progress" but acknowledged "we're not out of the woods yet."

He said Republicans had been driven in part by a focus to "beat Obama" and he hoped winning a second term would change that mentality.

"My hope, my expectation is that after the election, now that it turns out the goal of beating Obama doesn't make much sense because I'm not running again, that we can start getting some cooperation again," Obama said.

Obama told workers at the Honeywell plant that Congress could still take steps to help jumpstart the economy. While acknowledging the political realities of an election year, he said the November election was no reason for inaction in Washington.

"There's no excuse for it, not when there are so many people out there looking for work," he said.

He cited providing more money for states and local governments to help avert layoffs of teachers and first responder layoffs, saying the dollars could "serve as a buffer in case the situation in Europe gets any worse."

Obama wants Congress to support incentives to hire veterans as police officers and firefighters. He also was taking action to help service members with manufacturing and high-demand skills receive civilian credentials and licenses.

The veterans "job corps" is part of Obama's to-do list to spur job creation. It features a number of economic initiatives he has pushed before to help manufacturers, homeowners and veterans.

Obama was holding three fundraisers at a Minneapolis restaurant owned by the sons of Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton. Later in the day, he was headed to his hometown of Chicago, where he was holding three more fundraisers and staying overnight in his own home.

The events were supporting the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee of Obama's campaign, the Democratic National Committee and several state Democratic parties.

Why You Shouldn't Give Up on Your 401(k) | Avid Investor Group

Between turbulent financial markets, high fees, and a lack of employer support, many workers are just about ready to give up on their 401(k) retirement plans. But even though many of the criticisms of employer-sponsored retirement plans are valid, you can still navigate the twists and turns of the 401(k) world to make great use of the plans to help you retire comfortably and securely.

Why everyone hates 401(k)s
Plenty of hawkers of financial advice ? myself included ? dwell at length about the value of 401(k) plans. They let you set aside relatively huge amounts of money ? $17,000 in 2012 ? and give many people the largest tax deduction they?ll get on an annual basis, saving thousands in current income taxes. Used correctly, they also impose discipline on savers, locking away money to devote toward the single purpose of saving for retirement.

But while the theory behind 401(k) plans is solid, what happens in practice often falls short of the ideal. Consider some of the black marks against 401(k)s:

• To many, the very existence of the 401(k) plan is an affront to the notion that employers should directly provide for their workers? retirements through traditional pension plans. Yet this year, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC??) and General Motors (NYSE: GM??) have joined the dozens of employers that have frozen at least some of their workers? pension plans in recent years, instead shunting workers toward 401(k) plans.
• Typically, a company that moves from a traditional pension to a 401(k) plan will make additional employer contributions toward workers? retirement. Yet during the recession, Ford (NYSE: F??) and FedEx (NYSE: FDX??) were just two of the many companies that suspended employer matching contributions. Although they?ve since restored their matching, the episode shows that workers can?t count on employers to stand by them in tough times.
• 401(k) plans lock workers into a fixed slate of investment options. If employers choose wisely, they may give workers access to strong low-cost investments. But all too often, employers pick investments with high fees in order to minimize their own administrative costs, which can lead to workers paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra costs over their careers.
• Given how often people switch jobs, 401(k) plans present a challenge in that they?re tied to a particular employer. Although you can transfer 401(k)s to a new employer or to a retirement account of your own, it introduces an additional hassle. Moreover, with some employer contributions requiring you to stay at a job for a certain minimum period, many workers end up forfeiting those employer contributions when they switch jobs too soon.

With all these downsides, it?s a wonder why anyone uses 401(k) plans. But with some work, it can still be worth it to save in an employer-sponsored plan.

Be smart with your retirement
The key to making the most of your 401(k) is to find its strengths. Most 401(k)s have a combination of high-fee actively managed funds and low-cost index funds. If you stick with the low-cost alternatives, you?ll generally do better over the long haul.

In addition, don?t look at switching jobs as a hassle but rather as an opportunity. Whenever you switch jobs, you can take 401(k) money and roll it into an IRA that you have complete control over. The rollover lets you pick nearly any investment you want, so even if you?re stuck in a high-fee 401(k), you can then save a bundle by moving your money into your IRA and choosing better investments of your own.

Finally, pay at least minimal attention to vesting rules for employer contributions. I?m not saying you should stay at a job you hate for an extra couple of years in order to keep a few thousand dollars of matches. But if it?s a matter of sticking it out for a month or two, it may be worth the effort.

Don?t give up
401(k)s deserve the criticism they?ve gotten, but that doesn?t mean you should give up on them. Used correctly, 401(k)s can still play an incredibly valuable role in helping you retire rich in the long run.

The campaign could get a boost this summer: Equestrian Dalma Malhas may become the first Saudi woman to compete in the Olympics. While she was born in the United States and trains in Europe, her participation would be a symbolic victory.

"At the end of the day, she's Saudi and she's representing Saudi Arabia," says Hadeer Sadagah, teenage co-captain of the Jeddah United basketball team.

Saudi Arabia is one of only three nations that have never included women in their Olympic delegations, and it still appears reluctant to do so. If Ms. Malhas competes in the London Games this summer, it will likely be as an individual invited by the International Olympic Committee, not as a member of the official Saudi delegation. Though the Japanese refer to island group as Takeshima and remain in a bitter dispute over the issue, ?Koreans are adamant that Dokdo is Korean sovereign territory ? and they are very committed to letting the rest of the world know.

The latest ploy: a Napa Valley wine produced by Korean-American dentist Ahn Jae-hyun at his Dokdo Winery that uses the island post code as its moniker.

Illustrating the fervor with which such attempts to garner attention for Korea?s sovereign claims over the outcrop, when the wine debuted on the Korean market the local distributor pledged to donate all proceeds to nonprofit groups promoting Korean sovereign claims in other countries. ?

While both Korea and Japan point to historical documents to back up their respective claims, South Korea has occupied Dokdo/Takeshima for more than half a century. And it remains a key rallying symbol for lingering resentment over Japan's colonial occupation of the then unified Korean Peninsula in the first half of the 20th century.

Previous efforts to highlight Korea?s territorial claims to Dokdo/Takeshima range from what some observers view as the practical to the more extreme.

In 2010, the Korean singer Kim Jang-hoon was behind a months-long video advertisement in New York's Times Square that not only specifically proclaimed Dokdo as Korean territory but also made sure to refer to the sea in which they are located the East Sea, as opposed to the Sea of Japan.

In recent years, a series of ads taken out in major American newspapers announced a near identical message. The latest, placed as a full-page ad in The New York Times in March by Dokdo campaigner Seo Kyoung-duk and South Korean e-commerce firm Gmarket displayed the national flags of four countries ? including the South Korean Taegukgi ? alongside the names of four islands related to each.

In the case of the other three countries, a line connects each island with the relevant national flag ? except that of South Korea and Dokdo. Readers were encouraged to connect the two, the implication being that Dokdo is Korean territory. Japan protested the ad.?

In 2008, the president of the Korean Dry Cleaners Association in the US produced plastic bags emblazoned with a picture and a map of the disputed island along with the English slogans ?Dokdo Island is Korean territory? and ?The Japanese government must acknowledge this fact,? which were taken up by about 100 Korean dry cleaners in New York.?

And the Korea Times, a leading South Korean English-language newspaper, has for several years run an international Dokdo-themed essay competition in conjunction with the Seoul-based Northeast Asian History Foundation that invariably challenges entrants to tip their hat toward Korea?s claims to the outcrop. The winner receives a $1,270 cash prize.

Still, despite the stated intentions of Dokdo wine producer Ahn and others like him, his website gently hints at what could be seen as the futility of the territorial dispute.

Without any apparent irony, it states: ?For as long as we can remember, there has been much controversy over the island and the ownership of it. Instead of appreciating the beauty of Dokdo, the world has been too busy fighting over it.?

RIM announced last quarter that it would no longer be providing its traditional financial guidance for upcoming quarters, but CEO Thorsten Heins has nonetheless seen fit to deliver a "business update" today that offers some indication of what's in store for the company. The headline is that it's unsurprisingly projecting an operating loss for the next quarter (Q1 of its 2013 fiscal year), although it's not saying exactly how much, noting only that the "on-going competitive environment is impacting our business in the form of lower volumes and highly competitive pricing dynamics in the marketplace." The company's also confirmed that it has hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to aid in its so-called strategic review, which it says includes "opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives." On the slightly brighter side of things, RIM was able to boast that it now has a worldwide subscriber base of 78 million, and that it now counts 80,000 BlackBerry apps and 15,000 PlayBook apps -- both significant increases from a year ago. Facebook stock pounded, hovers around $30

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock is dropping again, hovering around $30 after it hit a new low in morning trading.

Shares of Facebook Inc. are down $1.72, or 5.4 percent, to $30.19 as of late morning on Tuesday. Earlier, the stock hit $30.03, its lowest since Facebook began publicly trading more than a week ago.

The social networking company's stock priced at $38 in its initial public offering on May 18. Rather than a seeing a big first-day-pop, it closed just 23 cents higher on the following day. Now, it's about 20 percent below the IPO price.

The stock's public debut was marred by technical glitches at the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading. The company and the investment banks that led the IPO face shareholder lawsuits, which Facebook say are without merit.

Research has found that the quality of parenting in a child?s early life has a huge influence on their later progress at school and in life generally. ?Where do parents turn for advice on raising a child if they have had poor role models themselves? ?It seems to be the internet, yet chatting on social media sites may not explain why communicating with your child is important, or playing with them develops their imagination. Where do you learn to control your temper and increase your patience? ?Asking for help raising our children is the last parenting taboo, so I really welcome the government?s initiative. ?There are pockets of dysfunctional families who do need guidance to break the cycle of poor parenting, but they are often the families who won?t take up an offer of help. I hope this taboo will be broken by providing vouchers that can just be picked up on the high street [the vouchers are offered at Boots] and making the classes feel like an extension of antenatal classes.? ?The classes are unlikely to be attended by the parents who shout at their children six times a day, or feed them a packet of crisps or biscuits for breakfast. I?ve seen parents who tell me they don?t speak to their babies because their babies don?t speak to them. That sort of person will not go. ?That means ?5 million [the cost of the scheme] of taxpayer money will go towards helping the people who are doing a reasonable job already rather than addressing the parents who are unemployed, alcoholic, drug addicted or violent. How can we reach them? Schools and health visitors have a vital part to play in watching out for kids who are not treated right. ?I sit on a panel for the Centre for the Modern Family, a think tank addressing contemporary family issues. Their research has found that those families who are the most resilient are those where the parents are in work. Work makes you feel as if you are worth something and that is the key. Although I welcome the trial of this scheme, we must not kid ourselves that classes will solve the problem of poor parenting. People said the riots in London last year were down to bad parenting. I disagree. The riots were caused by much deeper social problems.?
