Samsung Brightside (Verizon Wireless)

Upon first glance, the Samsung Brightside looks a lot like a midrange, keyboarded smartphone. At $99.99, it's priced like one too. But the Brightside is actually just an overly ambitious feature?phone. It pairs a nice slide-out keyboard with a responsive touch screen and decent call quality. That's the bright side. Unfortunately, the phone's display looks terrible from any angle other than straight on, the camera is poor, the video camera is worse, and multimedia support is spotty. While it may be a decent choice for some, you'll probably be happier with either a simpler phone or a smartphone.

Design and Call Quality
The Brightside measures 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.3 ounces. It's made entirely of black plastic, with a coarsely textured back panel. There's a volume rocker on the upper left side of the phone, as well as lock and camera buttons on the right side. Aside from those, there are four function keys located beneath the phone's screen. At first, the 3.1-inch, 320-by-240-pixel capacitive display looks decent. It's a good size, and feels nice and responsive. But turn the phone even slightly and the colors look different, or you can't see anything at all. Unless you're looking straight at it, the screen is practically useless. That's a big disappointment. The screen also doesn't shift orientation unless you open the keyboard. That means you need to slide the phone open pretty much anytime you want to type anything, unless you're willing to deal with typing on the on-screen number pad.

The phone slides open to reveal a spacious four-row QWERTY keyboard. The keys are slightly raised plastic bubbles, and I had no trouble using the Brightside to type out long messages. But nearly every time I flipped open the keyboard, I accidentally pressed the phone's camera button or activated the voicemail. You can probably get around that with practice.

The Samsung Brightside is a dual-band EV-DO Rev 0 (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. Voice quality is pretty good. Voices sound clear and very loud in the phone's earpiece, though they lack depth and richness. On the other end, calls made with the phone sound a little robotic but clear and feature average noise cancellation. The speakerphone sounds fine and is just loud enough for outdoor use. Calls also sounded fine through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and the Nuance-powered voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth. Battery life was average at 5 hours and 25 minutes of talk time.

Interface and Apps
The Brightside has a simple, clean interface, though it could benefit from some customizability. The home screen consists of 12 icons, with a launchpad at the bottom of the screen for your contacts, number dialer, recent calls, and voicemail. While I like this layout, it's limited. To listen to music or watch a video, for instance, you need to tap through to the Media Center, then choose Pictures and Video, then choose Videos. If you watch a lot of videos, it would've been nice to have the option of replacing an icon on the home screen with a shortcut to the videos menu.

Aside from the physical camera button on the right side of the phone, if you want to take a photo you first need to choose My Pictures, and then find the small Camera button buried in the right corner of the screen. The option to place a camera button on the home screen would've been much easier. Or maybe I'm just reviewing too many smartphones lately. That complaint aside, I found the Brightside relatively easy to navigate.

Is the GOP Still the Party of Business? | The Baseline Scenario

By James Kwak

Jonathan Weisman of the?Times?wrote an article about the reluctance of many Republicans in Congress to extend policies that are traditionally favored by big business (and the Chamber of Commerce), such as infrastructure spending and funding for the Export-Import Bank. This points to a split between the traditional corporate wing of the GOP and the newer, ultra-conservative tax revolt wing.

My guess is that this will blow over and the Republicans will figure out a way to keep big business happy without upsetting the Tea Party too much. But it points out a potential shift among the people who fund the GOP.

Historically, the Republicans were the party of business. Businesses like to make money. That can mean a lot of different things for government policy. In some cases, they want less regulation, since regulatory compliance costs money. On the other hand, large companies often want more regulation, since they can absorb the costs of compliance better than small competitors. (See?The Economist on tax preparers for a recent example.) Regulation can also be a mechanism for price fixing, as with the old Interstate Commerce Commission, which functioned as a legal cartel for railroads. Businesses definitely want lower corporate tax rates, since that increases their net income. But they also like some types of government spending. Most obviously, defense contractors like lots and lots of defense spending. Less obviously, businesses have historically been major beneficiaries of free public education, since it gave them a more skilled workforce. So in general, the business community is not obviously in favor of lower taxes or lower spending.

Contrast this with the interests of billionaires. The super-rich do have a lot of wealth tied up in company stock, so to some extent they share the interests of businesses. But as rich people, they have their own interests. In this case, they unequivocally gain from lower taxes and lower government spending; they get to keep more money and they don?t need government services, as individuals. Besides, once you?ve made your first billion, it doesn?t really matter how your business does after that point.

With increasing inequality and the relaxation of contribution limits, the balance of power within the Republican Party may be shifting from big business to billionaires. As USA Today reported, 25 percent of all super PAC money in this election cycle has come from five people. Furthermore, super PACs are accelerating an ongoing trend of decreasing party control over spending. Note that while major trade organizations like the National Association of Manufacturers and the Business Roundtable favor government spending that supports businesses, the Club for Growth, an antitax organization, is against.

As I said, I think the party will figure out a way to paper over its differences ahead of the elections in November. But in the long term, how long will it be before the business community figures out that the new Republican Party has fallen into the hands of antitax, antigovernment zealots who are willing to put low personal income tax rates ahead of high corporate profits?

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) ? A Vermont snowplow driver who wanted to "get a girl" was accused Wednesday along with his wife of luring a popular prep school teacher from her home by pretending their vehicle had broken down, beating and strangling her, stripping her body naked and throwing it into the Connecticut River.

Allen Prue, 30, and Patricia Prue, 33, of Waterford, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Melissa Jenkins, whose SUV was found idling along a remote road near her St. Johnsbury home on Sunday with her unharmed 2-year-old inside.

Police said Allen Prue was riding around on Sunday with his wife when he got the idea "to get a girl," the affidavit said. "They didn't plan to get one forcefully," the police affidavit said.

Police gave no further details on a possible motive in the death of the 33-year-old teacher at the prestigious St. Johnsbury Academy. The Prues were ordered held without bail, and police said more charges were possible.

"They knew Miss Jenkins and had snowplowed her driveway a couple of years ago," Vermont State Police Maj. Ed Ledo said at a news conference announcing the arrests.

A friend told police that Allen Prue had asked Jenkins out a couple of times and that she felt uncomfortable around him, according to the documents. She stopped having him plow, and in autumn 2011 he showed up drunk at her home asking if he could plow her driveway the following year.

After the court appearance, Allen Prue's mother, Donna Prue, said that her son has never been in trouble with the law before and that she has faith he didn't commit the crime.

"I do not believe he would ever do this, because he didn't have it in him. I have nothing against her (Patricia); I don't have nothing bad to say about either one," said Donna Prue, who lives with the couple and her daughter. She said she did not know Jenkins.

Patricia Prue's first husband, Jeffry Witkoff, 38, of Littleton, Colo., said the news was shocking.

"If somebody told me she's a murderer, that's nothing that would pop into her head. When I knew her she did a have history of mental issues, for anxiety and depression and social anxiety," he said. They were legally separated in 2007 and divorced in 2009, he said.

Police were called Sunday night after Jenkins' son was found alone in her vehicle.

Her former boyfriend told police she called him saying that she had gotten a weird call from a couple who used to plow her driveway and that she was going to help them. She wanted someone to know what she was doing, the documents say.

When he couldn't reach her two hours later, he went to check on her. He told police he found her vehicle, with her son sleeping in it, and one of her shoes nearby.

Allen Prue later told police that Patricia Prue called Jenkins and told her they had broken down near her home.

The death of the well-loved science teacher at St. Johnsbury Academy, once attended by President Calvin Coolidge, reverberated through the town of 6,200 in northeastern Vermont about 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

Ledo said he hoped the arrests would bring closure for Jenkins' family and friends.

"We can now turn our full attention to healing from this tragic loss, celebrating Melissa's life and mourning her death," said Joe Healy, a spokesman for St. Johnsbury Academy.

The court documents describe the encounter this way:

When the 33-year-old Jenkins got out of her vehicle, Allen Prue grabbed her and strangled her. He said his wife was outside helping him but didn't know what she was doing. He then put the body in the backseat of their car, and they drove to their home. At some point, Patricia Prue choked Jenkins in the car "to ensure she wasn't breathing."

Back at their home, he put Jenkins' body on a tarp, removed her clothes and poured bleach on her body. The Prues also removed their clothes and put them on the tarp.

They then drove to a boat access at the Connecticut River, which separates Vermont from New Hampshire, and put Jenkins' body in the water, weighing it down with cinder blocks and concealing it with brush.

They threw a prepaid cellphone that Patricia had used to call Jenkins into the water near Moore Dam and took the tarp and the clothes to New Hampshire where they burned them.

Jenkins' body was found in shallow water of the river with her feet tied and severe bruising indicating a severe beating before her death, the affidavit said.

Police say condoms and wrappers were found near the body.

Tripping Breaker - Tripping Circuit Breaker Tips

Breaker trips are often caused by overloaded circuits. Overload is the main reason for breaker tripping.

These are typical examples of the electrical overload and how to deal with it:

- One of our 15 amp breakers keeps tripping. The breaker feeds: fridge, washer, master bedroom, bathroom, TV, lights in the kitchen, corridor, laundry room and porch. It was always OK. But recently the breaker started tripping. What could be a cause?

- There are two girls in the family. They keep tripping the breaker every morning when they plug in both hair dryers. It blows the breaker and of course they blame me, their father. Should I replace the 15 Amp breaker with the 20 Amp one? (NO. Please don't do that. Keep reading)

- Microwave oven trips the circuit breaker every second day. Especially when I use a toaster, electric kettle or a coffee maker at the same time.

These three are perfect indicators of overloading and excessive current running through the wires that causes a circuit breaker to trip. The breaker is specifically designed to do exactly that. It opens the circuit and protects the wires from overheating and burning.

The solution of the problem is to run an extra line from the panel. And to split the overloaded circuit in two. This will cut the load in half. Both the old line and the newly installed one will now carry only half of the original load. Problem Solved! This is the best but more expensive way to deal with the overload.

Another solution is using extension cords and plugs connected to other lines and breakers to spread the original load among them. This option is not convenient and could be considered only as a temporary one.

Short circuit is the second most common reason for breaker tripping

Second common cause of breaker tripping is a short circuit. It usually happens during or after something has been done in the house, like home repair, light installation, plug change, wiring upgrade or line extension. Or damaged during renovation.

- The electrical in the house was fine until carpet was installed a couple of days ago. The circuit breaker flipped. It trips again immediately after each attempt to turn it back on.

- I recently put drywall up in the basement. After that two breakers supplying power to basement lights and plugs have tripped and won't reset. They actually sparked each time I tried to reset them. Probable causes - either a wire had been cut, or a nail or screw ran through the wire. Call an electrician and expect substantial damage to the recently completed work.

- A fridge that I just bough has tripped the breaker right after I plugged it into an outlet. I was wandering if the plug or the fridge may be causing the problem? Using an extension cord plug the fridge into a wall outlet connected to another breaker. If the fridge starts and works properly for 15 minutes, go to point a) below. If another breaker instantly shuts the power off, the problem is with the fridge. Examine the cord carefully. Plug in again. If different breakers keep tripping. Buy a new fridge or call an appliance repair shop.

a) The fridge has tripped first wall plug but it works fine with extension cord plugged into another one. The reason is inside the first wall outlet. Turn off the breaker to that line, open the plug and look for the obvious signs like loose screws, damaged insulation, wires touching each other or the metal box. Tighten screws holding wires in place and put everything back. Turn the breaker on and plug in the fridge. If the problem persists, call an electrician.

- My favorite antique table lamp causes power outage each time I plug it in. What's the problem? If while using different wall plugs the lamp has tripped two or more different breakers, then the problem is within the lamp. Inspect its cord for damage or a melted appearance. Check the insulation on the wires to make sure it is not cracked and there is no touching of wires together. Or take it to a repair shop.

Less common problem could happen when a circuit breaker itself has gone bad. It needs to be replaced. Ask a licensed electrician to do that.

Special purpose breakers like GFCI and AFCI are those with a button. These are more sensitive and complicated. Should you have a problem with one of them, your best bet is to call an electrician.

(AP) ? The discovery of a body believed to be that of a beloved teacher at a prestigious boarding school sent shudders of grief and anxiety through a small New England town a day after her SUV was found running with her unharmed 2-year-old boy inside.

Melissa Jenkins, a 33-year-old single mother, taught science at St. Johnsbury Academy, a school of about 970 students that was established in the 1840s and whose alumni include former President Calvin Coolidge.

Vermont State Police Maj. Ed Ledo would not give details on the condition of the body found Monday in Barnet, a town not far St. Johnsbury. A friend who was looking for Jenkins called police Sunday and Jenkins' vehicle was discovered that evening near signs of a struggle.

An autopsy was planned for Tuesday. A family friend is caring for the boy. His father, B.J. Robertson, would not comment on Jenkins' disappearance.

Authorities acknowledged they did not know whether Jenkins' disappearance was isolated, and Ledo said at a news conference that the public should be vigilant as authorities continue to seek a suspect.

Throughout the day, townsfolk converged at the restaurant where Jenkins worked part-time, seeking solace and updates. As they braved bone-chilling winds for an evening candlelight service, news about the discovery of the body began filtering through the crowd.

"She would do anything for anybody. She definitely will be greatly missed," said Ron Craig, of Peacham, who said he and his wife occasionally babysat Jenkins' son.

Craig said it's scary that police did not know if this was an isolated incident. "We've been locking our doors all the time because you just don't know what's going to happen," he said.

Jenkins' vehicle was found not far from her home in a rural area at 11:30 p.m. Sunday. She had no restraining orders out on anyone, police said.

Jenkins was a girls freshman basketball coach and a dorm proctor until she had her son. She graduated from Lyndon State College with a degree in natural science and geology. She was working on her master's degree, headmaster Tom Lovett said.

"She's got a real gift with students who either haven't liked science before or learning science doesn't come easy to them," Lovett said. "She's got a real gift with them."

St. Johnsbury Academy also serves as a public school for the town, about 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

Jenkins was a waitress at night at The Creamery Restaurant in Danville, the eatery where co-workers, friends and the father of Jenkins' son gathered Monday afternoon along with others who were curious or concerned.

"We all know her. It's a tough thing right now," said Marion Cairns, the owner, who described Jenkins as bright, pretty, a good mother and fun to be around. "She'd cut her arms off before she'd let anybody touch that boy. I mean, that boy meant everything to her."

Eric Berry, 44, of Lyndonville, a cousin by marriage whose daughter is Jenkins' goddaughter, described her as a beautiful, kind person whom he believes was coming to someone's aid when she disappeared.

"She left her house with the idea, I think, to try to help somebody, and that's as far as I'm going to go with that because I don't want to damage any investigation," he said.

The academy will provide counseling to grieving students, Lovett said.

The disappearance recalled that of 20-year-old Krista Dittmeyer of Portland, Maine, whose car was found idling with its hazard lights on, her 14-month-old daughter unharmed, a year ago about 50 miles away in New Hampshire. Dittmeyer's body was found in a pond. Three men were arrested on charges in her robbery and killing.

Authorities said Monday there is no indication the cases were related.

You will be amazed at the countrysides of rolling green hills that seem to stretch out never ending. The charm the homes as well as the bed and breakfast houses, unless brand new buildings exude this and allow you to live in historical places of England?s past.

You must visit some of the many shires which surround the countryside here. These are still quaint in all of their English charm but have kept up with the newer times as well.

One castle which is something you and your family must tour is Thornbury Castle. This is located within South Gloucestershire England. More of a Tudor designed country house this structure is amazing. King Henry VIII confiscated this home after the Duke was beheaded.

"Amendment One" will gut our Civil Domestic Violence protections

Amendment ONE is up for vote on May 8.? Proponents claim that it will ban forever gay marriage in our state.? However, it has a far more reaching impact.

The Amendment states that the only "domestic union" that will be "valid or recognized" in North Carolina will be a marriage between one man and one woman.?? But our civil domestic violence law, Chapter 50B, specifically lists the domestic unions that are protected by that law.? Chapter 50B lists married couples, but also couples in a dating relationship, couples who live together, people?(including kids) who live in the same household together, couples who have a child together, and ex-spouses.? This law recognizes and protects all of those domestic relationships and makes it possible for a person in one of those relationships who is abused to go to civil District Court and get a "Domestic Violence Restraining Order."?? In most counties a victim does not even need a lawyer to get the Order.? And if the victim has been injured, then the District Court judge can order the abusive boyfriend, husband, ex-husband, or member of the household, to surrender his guns, his ammo, and his gum permits.??

Now, what happens to this excellent civil domestic violence law when Amendment ONE gets passed by the voters?? Well, all those domestic relationships that are protected in Chapter 50B--ex-wives, girlfriends, members of the household--all of those relationships will suddenly no longer be?"recognized or valid" in the eyes of NC law.?? Remember, the Amendment says that the only domestic relationship that will be "recognized or valid" is a marriage between a man and a woman.??So, the domestic relationship between girlfriend and boyfriend, between people who are engaged to be married, and between divorced spouses or people who had a child together--those relationships are no longer going to be "recognized or valid" in NC law!??

You see,?a Constitutional Amendment trumps all other laws.? The General Assembly cannot override an amendment, and judges cannot override it either.??When this amendment passes, that civil domestic violence law will become meaningless for most domestic violence victims, because the domestic relationship in which the violence occurred?will no longer be "recognized or valid" in our law.??If the law does not recognize something or deem it valid, then the law cannot protect it.??For that simple reason, Amendment One will do away with the civil protections for many?victims of domestic violence in North Carolina.? the only domestic relationship still covered by that law will be that of a victim who is currently married to the abuser.??

Regardless of how you may feel about gay marriage, this unwanted side effect of the Amendment?is a good reason to vote AGAINST Amendment One on May 8.?

But the folks trying to sell this Amendment are not being honest about this problem--in an article recently about it in the Raleigh News and Observer,?Paul "Skip" Stam (the Republican legislator from Apex who is pushing it) and Tami Fitzgerald, director?of "Vote for Marriage North Carolina" both denied that the Amendment would negate our domestic violence laws.? Stam?knows better, and he pulled a fast one by claiming that?it would not harm domestic violence "criminal" laws.? That is correct so far as it goes--domestic violence usually is a criminal act.? But he did not address the real issue, which is the adverse effect the Amendment will have on our civil domestic violence laws, notably Chapter 50B.??That is not a criminal law.? But depriving the victims of domestic violence the ability to go to civil court and get protection from the abuser, now that ought to be criminal!????Please vote AGAINST AMENDMENT ONE on May 8!??For a more detailed analysis of this problem see my article here:???http://www.avvo.com/legal-guides/ugc/north-carolinas-amendment-one

Syrians brave gunfire in anti-Assad protests

Reuters

Demonstrators gather during a protest against Syria's President Bashar al-Assad after Friday prayers in Binsh, near Idlib, on Friday.

By msnbc.com news services

Tens of thousands of Syrians braved tear gas and gunfire to protest across the country Friday, vowing to storm the capital Damascus to oust President Bashar Assad as the European Union ramped up pressure on the regime by imposing sanctions on his wife and other close relatives.

Security forces deployed in many cities to disperse protests, but opposition groups reported fewer protester deaths than in past weeks. Activists said more than 20 people were killed nationwide in army attacks on opposition areas or clashes with armed rebels.

International condemnation and high-level diplomacy have failed to stop the year-old Syria crisis, which the U.N. says has killed more than 8,000 people, many of them civilian protesters.

Friday's sanctions bring to 13 the sets imposed by the EU to try to compel the regime to halt its violent crackdown on dissent. The U.S. and others have also imposed sanctions. Previous measures were aimed at Syrian companies and Assad himself.

EU bans Assad's wife from traveling and shopping within its territories

Those imposed Friday targeted Asma Assad, Syria's British-born first lady, banning her from traveling to EU countries and freezing any assets she may have there. They also included the president's mother, sister, sister-in-law and eight government ministers.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said sanctions were weakening the regime.

"Their economic situation becomes ever more difficult. Syria has few reserves," he said. "We think its economic situation will become untenable."

The new sanctions came on a day of renewed violence across Syria, with the army raining mortar rounds into the rebellious city of Homs, killing civilians, opposition supporters said.

Live television feeds from around Syria showed a slew of anti-Assad rallies, including in the Damascus district of Barzeh, in the northwestern city of Hama, in Qamishli in the Kurdish east, and in the southern province of Deraa.

"Damascus here we come," read several placards held up by the relatively small crowds. Activists said eight people were wounded after demonstrations near five Damascus mosques were broken up by security forces.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 13 civilians were killed in government attacks Friday. Government troops and armed rebels clashed in a number of places, with at least seven soldiers and one rebel fighter killed, the group said.

Another group, the Local Coordination Committees, said government troops killed 36 civilians on Friday. It did not provide details on each civilian killed.

On the diplomatic front, the U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, who is leading international efforts to stop the relentless mayhem, planned to travel to Moscow and Beijing this weekend for talks on the crisis, his spokesman said.

At least 500 children killed in conflict
While sanctions have hurt Syria's economy, they appear to have had little effect on the regime's actions.

In Geneva, the U.N. Human Rights Council blasted Syria's crackdown and extended the mandate of a U.N. expert panel tasked with reporting on alleged abuses in the country.

A resolution passed by the 47-member body condemned "widespread, systematic and gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms perpetrated" by Syrian authorities, including summary executions, torture and sexual abuse of detainees and children.

Also Friday, UNICEF said at least 500 children have been killed in the conflict, while hundreds more have been injured, detained or abused. The U.N. children's agency said schools have closed and health centers have shut down or become too dangerous for many families to reach.

Throughout the conflict, China and Russia have protected Syria from censure by the U.N. Security Council, fearing a strongly worded resolution condemning Assad could pave the way for military intervention, as happened in Libya last year.

Russia, however, softened its stance Thursday by calling for Assad to pull his troops out of Syrian cities. The U.N. has been trying to secure a cease-fire so all parties could hold a dialogue on a political solution to end the conflict. So far, both sides have refused talks.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Observatory, said Friday evening that he had yet to confirm the death of one protester during the day, saying this is unusual because many more protesters are often killed by security forces.

"We hope it happens like this every time because we don't want anyone to die," he said.

The Syrian government has barred most media from working in the country, and activist accounts could not be independently verified.

Syria's state news agency said hundreds marched in a pro-Assad demonstration in the capital Damascus and published photos of them carrying Syrian flags and Assad photos.

In Jordan's capital Amman, blind Syrian cleric Ahmad al-Sayasneh called on a congregation of 1,000 Syrians to "remain steadfast until our tyrant leadership is ousted."

It was the cleric's first public appearance since fleeing Syria two months ago. Al-Sayasneh rose to prominence though his fiery sermons calling for civil disobedience at a mosque in the southern Syrian town of Deraa, considered the uprising's birthplace.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Holding a gun may make you think others are too

NEW YORK (AP) ? No one knows what led a Florida neighborhood watch captain to shoot Trayvon Martin, a teenager carrying no weapon.

But a new study raises an intriguing question: Could the watch captain have been fooled into thinking the youth was armed in part because he himself was holding a gun?

In the study, volunteers who held a toy gun and glimpsed fleeting images of people holding an object were biased toward thinking the object was a gun.

It's another indication that the brain shapes what we perceive in the world beyond the information that comes in through our eyes, said James Brockmole of the University of Notre Dame, who did the work with psychologist Jessica Witt at Purdue University.

In a telephone interview, Brockmole stressed he had no inside information on the Feb. 26 shooting of 17-year-old Martin, who was shot and killed in a gated community in Sanford, a suburb of Orlando. The neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman, said he shot the teen in self-defense because the youth attacked him. The case has drawn outrage and protests, and the federal Department of Justice said Monday it will investigate.

Brockmole said it's possible that Zimmerman's perception might have been skewed by being armed.

Race may have also played a role. Martin is black; Zimmerman's family says he is Hispanic. Past research suggests that people can be more likely to perceive a poorly seen object as a gun if it's held by a black person than by a white person, experts say.

Zimmerman has not spoken publicly. The police report does not mention whether he thought Martin had a firearm. But during his patrol of the neighborhood in his SUV, Zimmerman called 911 and told a police dispatcher that he was following Martin. "We've had some break-ins my neighborhood. ...There is a really suspicious guy."

Then a bit later, he said the youth was approaching and "he's got something in his hands."

In the study which was carried out well before the shooting, undergraduates at Notre Dame and Purdue glimpsed scenes of people holding objects and had to decide quickly whether the object was a gun. The results showed they were biased toward thinking so if they themselves were holding a toy gun, rather than a plastic ball. Just having a gun nearby didn't make a difference, researchers found.

Why is that? Brockmole said people are primed to act in the world rather than just passively see it. So their minds have to contain information both about what they see and what they might do in response. Evidently, each kind of information can influence the other, he said.

He said the work, which is set to be published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, is not intended to support gun control. But he said it suggests that people should know that when they hold a gun "that might change how you're going to interpret what's around you."

Brockmole's findings make sense, said Evan Risko, who studies perception and attention at Arizona State University. "Our perception is influenced by a number of different factors, and that can have important consequences," he said.

Dennis Proffitt, who studies visual perception at the University of Virginia, said there are many reasons why one person might think another is armed, such as if he is worried about his own safety or if he thinks the other person is a robber. The effect of holding a gun oneself "could be part of the story" in Florida, he said.

Rapids run past Union

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:40 p.m. ET March 18, 2012

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Jaime Castrillon and Tony Cascio scored and the Colorado Rapids defeated the Philadelphia Union 2-1 on Sunday.

The Rapids (2-0) played short-handed for more than 36 minutes and continued their strong play after a 2-0 win over Columbus in the opener.

Castrillon put the Rapids ahead 1-0 in the 56th minute when he corralled a loose ball in front of the net and tapped the ball past Philadelphia goalkeeper Zac MacMath.

Omar Cummings, who picked up an assist, sent the crossing pass toward MacMath, but the ball slipped through his fingers.

Colorado kept the pressure on after midfielder Jeff Larentowicz received a red card in the 58th minute.

In the 62nd minute, Cascio's goal extended the Rapids' advantage.

Forward Lionard Pajoy scored in the 67th minute on a header.

The Union (0-2) began their third season following a trip to the Eastern Conference semifinals. Though Philadelphia lost to the Houston Dynamo in the two-match series, the front office brought in 14 new players this season.

So far, it's been a struggle.

Philadelphia lost 3-1 at Portland last Monday and managed just one goal again.

The Rapids remained unbeaten all time (3-0-2) against the Union.
