Saudi girls find freedom in cleats

A high-energy evening soccer game between two girls' teams is part of a growing female sports movement in conservative Saudi Arabia.

By Christa Case Bryant,?Staff writer / May 30, 2012

As the evening call to prayer rings out across Riyadh, a pack of teenage girls eating cotton candy and popsicles erupt in cheers, drowning out the muezzin.

Their favorite soccer team has just scored.

"Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!" they shout in English, jumping up and down for the yellow-clad Challenge team, long black curls flying. "Chall-ENNNNNNNNNge!!!"

The victory is larger than one goal, however: The college students facing off in tonight's tournament are female, a rarity in this male-dominated society where women have traditionally been kept in the background.

These girls ? among them aspiring surgeons, lawyers, and investment bankers ? are part of a small but growing group challenging this society's strictures on the distaff side.

While they are still forced to practice and play largely in secret ? no males, not even fathers, can attend their games ? the trend is part of the growing momentum for women's rights here. It is cultivating their ability to excel not only on the field but in school, society, and the workplace ? and fostering the kind of teamwork needed if this country is to develop stronger institutions.

"Sport is ... a small window [into change]," says businesswoman Lamya AlAbdulkarim, who recently helped launch a new girls' soccer program.

The campaign could get a boost this summer: Equestrian Dalma Malhas may become the first Saudi woman to compete in the Olympics. While she was born in the United States and trains in Europe, her participation would be a symbolic victory.

"At the end of the day, she's Saudi and she's representing Saudi Arabia," says Hadeer Sadagah, teenage co-captain of the Jeddah United basketball team.

Saudi Arabia is one of only three nations that have never included women in their Olympic delegations, and it still appears reluctant to do so. If Ms. Malhas competes in the London Games this summer, it will likely be as an individual invited by the International Olympic Committee, not as a member of the official Saudi delegation. She competed under similar circumstances in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, winning bronze.

Whose Islands are they? South Korea tries branding in its dispute with Japan

Japan and Korea have long sparred over the Takeshima/Dokdo islets. The latest bid to promote Korea's claim: Napa Valley wine labels.

Though the Japanese refer to island group as Takeshima and remain in a bitter dispute over the issue, ?Koreans are adamant that Dokdo is Korean sovereign territory ? and they are very committed to letting the rest of the world know.

The latest ploy: a Napa Valley wine produced by Korean-American dentist Ahn Jae-hyun at his Dokdo Winery that uses the island post code as its moniker.

Illustrating the fervor with which such attempts to garner attention for Korea?s sovereign claims over the outcrop, when the wine debuted on the Korean market the local distributor pledged to donate all proceeds to nonprofit groups promoting Korean sovereign claims in other countries. ?

While both Korea and Japan point to historical documents to back up their respective claims, South Korea has occupied Dokdo/Takeshima for more than half a century. And it remains a key rallying symbol for lingering resentment over Japan's colonial occupation of the then unified Korean Peninsula in the first half of the 20th century.

Previous efforts to highlight Korea?s territorial claims to Dokdo/Takeshima range from what some observers view as the practical to the more extreme.

In 2010, the Korean singer Kim Jang-hoon was behind a months-long video advertisement in New York's Times Square that not only specifically proclaimed Dokdo as Korean territory but also made sure to refer to the sea in which they are located the East Sea, as opposed to the Sea of Japan.

In recent years, a series of ads taken out in major American newspapers announced a near identical message. The latest, placed as a full-page ad in The New York Times in March by Dokdo campaigner Seo Kyoung-duk and South Korean e-commerce firm Gmarket displayed the national flags of four countries ? including the South Korean Taegukgi ? alongside the names of four islands related to each.

In the case of the other three countries, a line connects each island with the relevant national flag ? except that of South Korea and Dokdo. Readers were encouraged to connect the two, the implication being that Dokdo is Korean territory. Japan protested the ad.?

In 2008, the president of the Korean Dry Cleaners Association in the US produced plastic bags emblazoned with a picture and a map of the disputed island along with the English slogans ?Dokdo Island is Korean territory? and ?The Japanese government must acknowledge this fact,? which were taken up by about 100 Korean dry cleaners in New York.?

And the Korea Times, a leading South Korean English-language newspaper, has for several years run an international Dokdo-themed essay competition in conjunction with the Seoul-based Northeast Asian History Foundation that invariably challenges entrants to tip their hat toward Korea?s claims to the outcrop. The winner receives a $1,270 cash prize.

Still, despite the stated intentions of Dokdo wine producer Ahn and others like him, his website gently hints at what could be seen as the futility of the territorial dispute.

Without any apparent irony, it states: ?For as long as we can remember, there has been much controversy over the island and the ownership of it. Instead of appreciating the beauty of Dokdo, the world has been too busy fighting over it.?

RIM warns of loss for Q1, hires JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help with strategic review

RIM announced last quarter that it would no longer be providing its traditional financial guidance for upcoming quarters, but CEO Thorsten Heins has nonetheless seen fit to deliver a "business update" today that offers some indication of what's in store for the company. The headline is that it's unsurprisingly projecting an operating loss for the next quarter (Q1 of its 2013 fiscal year), although it's not saying exactly how much, noting only that the "on-going competitive environment is impacting our business in the form of lower volumes and highly competitive pricing dynamics in the marketplace." The company's also confirmed that it has hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to aid in its so-called strategic review, which it says includes "opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives." On the slightly brighter side of things, RIM was able to boast that it now has a worldwide subscriber base of 78 million, and that it now counts 80,000 BlackBerry apps and 15,000 PlayBook apps -- both significant increases from a year ago. It also further notes that BlackBerry 10 remains on track for the "latter part of calendar 2012." You can find the company's complete statement after the break.

Facebook stock pounded, hovers around $30

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock is dropping again, hovering around $30 after it hit a new low in morning trading.

Shares of Facebook Inc. are down $1.72, or 5.4 percent, to $30.19 as of late morning on Tuesday. Earlier, the stock hit $30.03, its lowest since Facebook began publicly trading more than a week ago.

The social networking company's stock priced at $38 in its initial public offering on May 18. Rather than a seeing a big first-day-pop, it closed just 23 cents higher on the following day. Now, it's about 20 percent below the IPO price.

The stock's public debut was marred by technical glitches at the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading. The company and the investment banks that led the IPO face shareholder lawsuits, which Facebook say are without merit.

will-david-camerons-plans-to-give-families-100-for-parenting ...

I was delighted to be asked for my opinion for?Time Out Magazine on the Government?s parenting classes initiative.

David Cameron is planning to tackle what he sees as a lack of discipline in the home by giving families ?100 vouchers for parenting classes. This week we ask: Will this scheme really make any long-term difference to struggling parents?

Yes ? Sue Atkins, parenting author and broadcaster

?Achieving parenting confidence is not an accident. It is created by specific ways of thinking and acting. Research has found that the quality of parenting in a child?s early life has a huge influence on their later progress at school and in life generally. ?Where do parents turn for advice on raising a child if they have had poor role models themselves? ?It seems to be the internet, yet chatting on social media sites may not explain why communicating with your child is important, or playing with them develops their imagination. Where do you learn to control your temper and increase your patience? ?Asking for help raising our children is the last parenting taboo, so I really welcome the government?s initiative. ?There are pockets of dysfunctional families who do need guidance to break the cycle of poor parenting, but they are often the families who won?t take up an offer of help. I hope this taboo will be broken by providing vouchers that can just be picked up on the high street [the vouchers are offered at Boots] and making the classes feel like an extension of antenatal classes.? For more on the Can Parent vouchers, visit nct.org.uk

No ? Liz Fraser, parenting author and broadcaster

?The classes are unlikely to be attended by the parents who shout at their children six times a day, or feed them a packet of crisps or biscuits for breakfast. I?ve seen parents who tell me they don?t speak to their babies because their babies don?t speak to them. That sort of person will not go. ?That means ?5 million [the cost of the scheme] of taxpayer money will go towards helping the people who are doing a reasonable job already rather than addressing the parents who are unemployed, alcoholic, drug addicted or violent. How can we reach them? Schools and health visitors have a vital part to play in watching out for kids who are not treated right. ?I sit on a panel for the Centre for the Modern Family, a think tank addressing contemporary family issues. Their research has found that those families who are the most resilient are those where the parents are in work. Work makes you feel as if you are worth something and that is the key. Although I welcome the trial of this scheme, we must not kid ourselves that classes will solve the problem of poor parenting. People said the riots in London last year were down to bad parenting. I disagree. The riots were caused by much deeper social problems.?

Mayor donates O's skybox tickets to 27 nonprofits, schools

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has donated use of her office's skybox at Oriole Park at Camden Yards to 27 nonprofit or charitable organizations this year, including her daughter's school, according to a list provided by the mayor's office.

The Parent Teacher Organization at Mount Washington Elementary/Middle School auctioned off tickets to the box this month, raising $1,000 as part of the group's "Swing Into Spring" event, officials said.

Mayoral spokesman Ryan O'Doherty said that Rawlings-Blake routinely makes the skybox available to nonprofit organizations and that any nonprofit is free to request its use for fundraising purposes.

"This year, as in years past, the organizations contact the Mayor's office to make the requests which are handled as they are received," he wrote in an email. "Any Baltimore area charitable or nonprofit organization may contact the Mayor's Office and make a request at any time."

But government watchdog group Common Cause said the mayor should institute a formal policy to avoid any appearance of favoritism.

"It really should be the people's skybox," said James Browning, the regional director for Common Cause. "There should be a formal application process, so people can be confident that there is no favoritism." He called the box a "valuable asset" that could help a struggling charity.

O'Doherty said six schools have been granted access to the box for fundraising purposes this year. They are Mount Washington Elementary/Middle School, where Rawlings-Blake's daughter attends; Federal Hill Preparatory School, where O'Doherty's son attends; Grace and Saint Peter's school, an Episcopal school in Mount Vernon that the mayor attended; and three all-girls Catholic schools ? Catholic High School, Mercy High School, and the Institute of Notre Dame.

Mayoral spokesman Ian Brennan said O'Doherty was not aware of the request for tickets for Federal Hill Preparatory School.

At Mount Washington, neither the PTO president nor the school principal responded to requests for comment.

This year, the mayor's office also donated use of the baseball skybox to Center Stage for an auction co-sponsored by The Baltimore Sun and to the Kennedy Krieger Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mercy Medical Center, Village Learning Place and the American Heart Association, among other groups.

In contrast, Rawlings-Blake's guests in the city's skybox for last season's eight Ravens home games typically included a small circle of city employees, business leaders, campaign donors, and family members, The Baltimore Sun reported in February. The Orioles have an 81-game home season.

"When a request comes in, and tickets are available, they are provided in the order they are received," O'Doherty said of the Orioles tickets.

Sonia Socha, executive director of the South Baltimore Learning Center, which promotes adult literacy, said Rawlings-Blake attended the organization's fundraiser in March ? in which the group raised $5,000 by auctioning off the skybox tickets.

"This was a big year for us," said Socha. "The mayor spoke about how important adult literacy is for her. It made people more inclined to spend."

Socha said she's been requesting city skybox tickets for fundraising events since the administration of Mayor Martin O'Malley. She said a well-connected board member told her they were available.

"We would never have thought of it had it not been for a board member who suggested it," Socha said. "We would have never known it was available. It's wonderful. We really appreciate having the donations."

Institute of Notre Dame spokeswoman Lillian Knipp said the box raised nearly $2,000 for the school. It was won by principal Ann Seeley.

Governor O'Malley uses his boxes at the Ravens and Orioles' stadiums in a similar manner to Rawlings-Blake. His guests at Ravens games this past season included key politicians, campaign donors, and the family and friends of government officials. But tickets for nearly 40 percent of Orioles games were given to charities, schools, hospitals and nonprofit institutions last season, according to the governor's office.

O'Malley has no formal process for choosing whom to invite to his box, which is provided to the governor under the lease agreement for the stadium, but he uses it to promote "economic development, federal relations, legislative outreach," according to his spokesman.

The Baltimore Sun requested lists of skybox attendees after the mayor's use of the Ravens skybox was thrust into the spotlight. She rescinded an offer of tickets to City Council President Bernard C. "Jack" Young for the Jan. 11 playoff game against the Houston Texans. The move came after Young publicly criticized her efforts to plan another Grand Prix IndyCar race.

Brennan said Rawlings-Blake has said businesses who participate in the "Hire One Youth" campaign this summer will be added to a raffle for tickets to the city's Ravens skybox next season.

Replacing Old Windows ? As Simple As It Sounds | Home Repair ...

Home improvement projects have grown by leaps and bounds since information is so readily available in self-help books and online sites. Although that may sound like a threat to the contractors? business, perhaps it?s the silver lining as someone is bound to mess up. The contractor is then called in to fix the problem and ultimately still makes a buck or two.

How hard can it be to start your home improvement project by replacing old windows? That depends on the magnitude of work versus your capabilities, inborn or picked up along the way. For starters, replacing a window is not in the same league as, perhaps, repainting a room. Both are achievable with the correct materials and skills, yet the former is perhaps more challenging.

There are as many designs of houses as there are of windows. Hence, selecting a certain style with specific measurements to replace your existing windows do not entail a simple trip to your local hardware store and picking something off the shelf. More often than not, you may require custom-made windows to suit your requirements. This means additional costs and time.

More houses are now built using standard design templates which often make them look like commodities off a factory production line. Structures are pre-cast to ensure uniformity and speed in setting up. External trimmings such as doors, windows and roof tiles are the same as bulk purchases reduce cost. Hence, newly developed housing areas pop up all over like mushrooms after the evening rain. Window manufacturers have also responded to consumers? wishes as there is a growing market for replacing old windows. As such, it may be easier to source for new or replacement windows as these manufacturers are more willing to produce them as individual units. It?s become very much like consumable items, similar to tossing out your spent ink cartridge and buying a new one for your printer.

Although the notion of embarking on a home improvement project in this area sounds attractive, another challenge lies in the availability of specialized equipment. Depending on the type of new windows, there may be a need to employ such equipment to ensure proper installation. Experienced window installers have access to these types of devices and can easily bring the equipment onsite as part of the installation package.

If you still have apprehensions towards engaging professional help for replacing old windows, ask around to determine a list of reputable contractors. Surely not every contractor is out there to take you for a ride. There are honest ones who have done previous jobs of good quality and will be able to do the same for you.

UN Security Council condemns Syria massacre

Syria blamed terrorists for the Sunday massacre of more than 100 people, including children. Washington isn't buying it. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Updated at?6:01 p.m. ET -- The U.N. Security Council on Sunday unanimously condemned the Syrian government for heavy-weapons attacks on the town of Houla, the site of a massacre of at least 108 people, including many children, the council president said.
???
"The Security Council condemned in the strongest possible terms the killings, confirmed by United Nations observers, of dozens of men, women and children and the wounding of hundreds more in the village of (Houla), near Homs, in attacks that involved a series of government artillery and tank shellings on a residential neighborhood," the non-binding statement said.
???
"The Security Council also condemned the killing of civilians by shooting at close range and by severe physical abuse," said the statement, which was read out after the council's three-hour emergency meeting by Azerbaijan's Deputy U.N. Ambassador Tofig Musayev.

Facing mounting international outrage over the killings, Syria earlier on Sunday accused rebels of carrying out the massacre.

Images of bloodied and lifeless young bodies, lain carefully side by side after the onslaught on Friday, triggered shock around the world and underlined the failure of a six-week-old U.N. cease-fire plan to stop the violence.

Syrian authorities blamed "terrorists" for the massacre, among the worst carnage in the 14-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, which has cost about 10,000 lives.

"Women, children and old men were shot dead. This is not the hallmark of the heroic Syrian army," Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdesi told reporters in Damascus.

Makdesi said Syrian security forces were in their local bases Friday when they were attacked by "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen" firing mortars, heavy machine guns and anti-tank missiles, staring a nine-hour battle that killed three soldiers and wounded 16.

Opposition activists said Assad's forces shelled Houla after a protest and then clashed with fighters from the Sunni Muslim-led insurgency.

Activists say Assad's ?shabbiha' militia, loyal to an establishment dominated by members of the minority Alawite sect, then hacked dozens of the victims to death, or shot them.

Maysara al-Hilawi said he saw the bodies of six children and their parents in a ransacked house in the town.

"The Abdelrazzak family house was the first one I entered. The children's corpses were piled on top of each other, either with their throats cut or shot at close range," Hilawi, an opposition activist, said by telephone from the area.

"I helped collect more than 100 bodies in the last two days, mostly women and children. The last were six members of the al-Kurdi family. A father and his five kids. The mother is missing," he said.

Damascus protesters shot dead
Syrian forces shot dead two men on Sunday at a protest in Damascus against the killings in Houla, opposition activists said. The men's funerals also turned into demonstrations.

Footage broadcast by activists in the Damascus suburb of Yalda showed a crowd of hundreds at one of the men's funerals shouting "the people want the downfall of the regime."

Shaam News Network / AFP - Getty Images

A picture released by the Syrian opposition's Shaam News Network allegedly shows smoke billowing following a blast targeting a Syrian security forces vehicle on the ringroad outside the Damascus Mazze district early Sunday.

The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss the killings.

The United Nations believes that at least 108 people were killed in?the massacre, the U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told the meeting.

U.N. observers in Syria have confirmed that artillery and tank shells were fired, U.N.?Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a letter to the Security Council.

The letter, which was obtained by Reuters, said the observers "viewed the bodies of the dead and confirmed from an examination of ordnance that artillery and tank shells were fired at a residential neighborhood."

Western countries and Arab states opposed to Assad put the blame for the deaths squarely on Damascus.

The Gulf Cooperation Council of Sunni-led monarchies accused Assad's soldiers of using excessive force and urged the international community to "assume its responsibilities to halt the daily bloodshed in Syria."

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton spoke of a "heinous act perpetrated by the Syrian regime against its own civilian population" in a statement on Sunday. The head of the European parliament said it could amount to a war crime.

'Rule by murder'
"We are horrified by credible reports of targeting killing, including stabbing and ax attacks on women and children in Houla. These acts serve as a vile testament to an illegitimate regime that responds to peaceful political protest with unspeakable and inhuman brutality," U.S. National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Sunday.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanded that those who carried out the killings be held to account.

"The United States will work with the international community to intensify our pressure on Assad and his cronies, whose rule by murder and fear must come to an end," she said.

France said it would call a meeting of the Friends of Syria, a group of Western and Arab countries keen to see Assad removed.

Britain said it would summon Syria's envoy over the massacre and that it would call for a meeting of the U.N. Security Council in coming days.

The United Arab Emirates requested an urgent meeting of the Arab League, whose head, Nabil Elaraby, urged the U.S. Security Council to stop the killing.

Former U.N. Secretary-General Annan is to brief the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday and is likely to be guided on who is responsible by reports from U.N. observers in Houla.

Although the cease-fire plan negotiated by Annan has failed to stop the violence, the United Nations is nearing full deployment of a 300-strong unarmed observer force meant to monitor a truce.

The plan calls for a truce, withdrawal of troops from cities and dialogue between government and opposition.

Syria calls the revolt a "terrorist" conspiracy run from abroad, a veiled reference to Sunni Muslim Gulf powers that want to see weapons provided to the insurgents.

The United Nations has accused Assad's forces and insurgents alike of grave human rights abuses, including summary executions and torture.

NBC News contributed to this report from Reuters.

Apple and Samsung finally agree... to drop a plethora of claims from their patent spat

Apple and Samsung finally agree... to drop a plethora of claims from their patent spat

Last week, Judge Lucy Koh informed Apple and Samsung that they would have to reduce the number of patent claims at issue in the parties' Northern District of California litigation. And now, each has complied, with Samsung dropping its total number of asserted patent claims from 75 to 15, while dismissing two patents from the case altogether. For its part, Apple has reduced its case to one claim from each of its asserted utility patents, its four iPhone and one iPad design patents, and its trade dress claims for those two devices. Keep in mind, however, that they did so without prejudice, which means that either party can reassert these dismissed claims in a later lawsuit. That said, the parties have at least attempted to placate Judge Koh in order to keep their July 30th trial date, which is when the real legal fireworks begin. Feel free to check the filings below for the full scope of this most recent patent pruning.

Hands-on with Escort SmartRadar

Image

Escort has long enabled heavy footed -- but ticket shy -- drivers a little more freedom with just how quickly they're able to complete the daily commute. Escort's SmartRadar is set to extend that fun and cut the cord by including Bluetooth connectivity in the detector itself and enabling users to have a mostly out of sight installation -- as your handset becomes the interface to the radar. The SmartRadar integrates with Escort's Live ticket protection app which shares other users of the system's radar / laser hits and updates them in real time on your phone's display. Check the gallery for some pics of it installed behind the rearview mirror and a simulated laser notification.
