Drinking Can Derail Women's Efforts to Quit Smoking - Health News ...

NLF034 Drinking Can Derail Womens Efforts to Quit Smoking

FRIDAY, Feb. 15 (HealthDay News) ? You?re sharing a bottle of wine at a party or sipping a margarita at the bar when you feel a strong urge for a cigarette ? even though you?ve quit smoking.

Unfortunately, willpower is all too weak in these situations, new research suggests.

Women trying to stop smoking may at greater risk for relapse if they drink alcohol, according to the study from the University of Texas School of Public Health. Researchers found that women who drink to cope with the stress of trying to kick the habit may actually trigger more intense urges to smoke.

Awareness of this effect may spur strategies to help drinkers tempted to return to tobacco.

?Identification of situations that increase the risk for relapse will aid in the development of novel interventions that can address these situations in the moment of occurrence,? Michael Businelle, an assistant professor and study co-author, said in a UT news release.

The researchers tracked the smoking urges of 302 Seattle women aged 18 to 70 who were in the process of giving up smoking. The study, which was conducted from 1999 to 2002, focused on women because they have more difficulty quitting.

The women used hand-held computers to record their urges to smoke throughout the day. Participants also completed an assessment of each smoking urge they experienced. On days when the women drank alcohol, their smoking urges were different.

?Interestingly, these higher, more volatile smoking urges were reported before the individual actually began drinking, suggesting that alcohol consumption may have been in response to smoking urges rather than vice versa,? Businelle noted.

Women also were more likely to drink alcohol if they woke up with a strong urge to smoke. This suggests that women trying to stop smoking may turn to alcohol to ease the stress of trying to quit, the researcher say. However, since drinking actually triggers more intense urges to smoke, it could increase women?s risk of relapse, study authors concluded.

?On any given quit attempt, five out of 100 people are successful at quitting ?cold turkey,? 32 percent of those who take varenicline [Chantix] successfully quit, 25 percent of those who use patches and/or gum successfully quit, while those who combine counseling with medications have the best quit rates, greater than 30 percent,? Businelle said.

People trying to quit smoking should seek help from their doctor, he added. He also offered the following tips for those who want to stop smoking for good:

  • Track and record cigarette smoking and urges by time of day and intensity.
  • Discard all lighters, cigarettes and ashtrays.
  • Be more active or start a regular exercise routine.
  • Inform friends and family of plans to quit smoking so they can provide support and social pressure to help you stick to that goal.

Smoking-related illnesses are the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States, claiming more than 1,200 lives daily, the release noted.

The research was funded with grants from the U.S. National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society.

As asteroid zips past Earth, exploding meteor hints at what could have been

The meteor that exploded over Russia was much smaller than the asteroid that will buzz Earth Friday. But it shows how destructive Earth impacts can be ? and how unexpected.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / February 15, 2013

As scientists prepared to watch a massive asteroid zip past Earth Friday, a?10-ton meteor lit up the sky over the Russian region of Chelyabinsk before exploding into fragments high above the ground. And just like that, a day of one flying space rock became a day of two.?

"This is a big deal," says Kaliat Ramesh, a professor of mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. "You really should view this meteoroid we saw in Russia as a wake-up call" regarding the hazards even small objects can present, he adds.

Indeed, it's a day of multiple wake-up calls.

At 2:24 p.m. EST today, asteroid 2012 DA14 passed within a scant 17,200 miles of?Earth ? a whisker in cosmic terms.

The asteroid is about 150 feet across and poses no threat to Earth, astronomers say, although an object of that size could take out a major metropolitan area if it collided with the planet. But the asteroid's close approach provides a unique opportunity for researchers to track and study it in ways that could improve their ability to distinguish truly hazardous asteroids in near-Earth orbits from the more benign objects.

Russia's meteor, however, has been anything but benign.

The first reports of the meteor came in a 7:55 a.m. local time, with many people capturing the event using video cameras installed in their cars.

The meteor, perhaps the size of a small cargo truck, was traveling at about 33,000 miles per hour. It exploded into fragments somewhere between 18 and 30 miles above the Earth. The shock wave from the blast ? heard in the central Russian cities of Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinburg, and Tyumen ? blew out windows at locations closest to the meteor's path. At least 950 people were injured, mostly from flying glass, according to the Moscow Times.

In addition, a zinc factory was damaged, and cell-phone service was knocked out in some areas.

Although the event occurred as asteroid 2012 DA14 was on its final approach to its close encounter with Earth, the different paths the two objects traveled make it unlikely the meteor was a 2012 DA14 cast-off.?

Astronomers will have a better sense of the meteor's final orbit once they study the video that's available from the event, says Gareth Williams, an astronomer and associate director of the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass..

He explains that the video will allow researchers to reconstruct the meteor's path through the atmosphere in three dimensions. They can use this information to calculate the meteor's most probable orbit before its demise.

This was one of countless objects in near-Earth orbits that had eluded detection, despite efforts over the past 15 years to take a detailed census of these objects.?

The meteor "was not seen before it entered the atmosphere," Mr. Williams says. Had it been detected and reported to the center, it would have received a designator, similar to 2012 DA14, and we all could be describing this event as a collision with a small asteroid, he suggests.

Researchers say that objects the size of the Chelyabinsk meteor?enter the atmosphere once every few years but tend to go unheralded outside the asteroid-hazard community because they enter over oceans or vast stretches of uninhabited land.?

Obama honors six educators killed in Newtown massacre

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, marking a poignant moment in his push to curb gun violence, awarded presidential medals posthumously on Friday to six educators killed in the Newtown school massacre, saying they gave their lives to protect "the most innocent and helpless among us."

Obama bestowed the honor, which recognizes citizens who have performed "exemplary deeds" of service, on four teachers and two administrators killed in the December 14 shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, a tragedy that sparked nationwide calls for tighter gun control laws.

In a White House ceremony, Presidential Citizens Medals, the nation's second-highest civilian honor, were presented one-by-one to the slain women's families, many of them in tears as Obama embraced and consoled them. Twenty first-graders were also killed in the attack by a lone gunman.

Obama said the educators came to school that morning with "no idea that evil was about to strike."

"And when it did they could have taken shelter by themselves, they could have focused on their own safety, on their own well-being, but they didn't," he said.

"They gave their lives to protect the precious children in their care and gave all they had for the most innocent and helpless among us. That's what we honor today."

Obama, who has called the day of the mass shooting the worst of his presidency, is moving swiftly to try to build momentum for gun control legislation, using his otherwise policy-heavy State of the Union address on Tuesday to make an impassioned appeal.

But he faces an uphill battle against a powerful pro-gun lobby and a strong U.S. tradition of hunting and gun ownership. The right to bear arms is enshrined in the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Principal Dawn Hochsprung, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and teachers Rachel D'Avino, Lauren Rousseau, Anne Marie Murphy and Victoria Soto were killed in the attack carried out by the 20-year-old gunman, Adam Lanza.

Obama paid tribute to the slain educators in a ceremony that also honored a dozen other Americans in fields that included child development, gay rights, military veterans assistance, immigrant outreach and helping disabled women. They were selected from among nearly 6,000 nominations.

China: A smuggling platform for Iranian N-programme

As enforcement efforts have tightened globally, Iran is using China as a platform to smuggle sanctioned goods for its controversial nuclear programme, according to a United States think-tank.

A report, titled 'Ring Magnet for IR-1 Centrifuges' by the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, said that China needs to do more to show that it is a responsible member of the global economy.

The six-page report alleged that Iran uses private Chinese front companies which provide suppliers with false end-user statements.

In the case of high-tech goods, Iran seeks in China goods made in industrialised countries which these suppliers sell in the Chinese market. After acquiring the goods, smuggling networks arrange their shipment to Iran.

In this type of smuggling operation, China is considered a transit or turntable country between the supplier and Iran. Iran has sought vacuum pumps, high strength, lightweight materials such as maraging steel and carbon fiber, vacuum measuring equipment, leak detectors, and many others, all made by European, Japanese and US suppliers, it said.

The ISIS in its report said it obtained an enquiry posted on a Chinese commercial web site in late 2011 that shows an effort by an Iranian company to buy 100,000 ring magnets.

Technical analysis by ISIS and a European government showed that these ring magnets match those used in Iran's first generation IR-1 gas centrifuge.

"The ring magnets are magnetized, making them ready for use in IR-1 centrifuges. Since these ring magnets can be used in Iran's centrifuge programme, their export to Iran is banned under United Nations Security Council resolutions that forbid the supply of goods usable in Iran's enrichment programmes," it said.

Such a large order implies that Iran remains committed to building tens of thousands of this model of centrifuge, despite its parallel push to build advanced centrifuges such as the IR-2m, it added.

Notably the IR-1 centrifuge is a copy of the P-1 centrifuge deployed in Pakistan that in turn was a 1970s Dutch design stolen by A Q Khan while he lived in the Netherlands at that time. The Iranian advanced centrifuge is derived from the P-2 centrifuge, which Khan also stole in the 1970s.

The ISIS enquiry also brings into picture for the first time the name of a relatively smaller Indian company.

"The enquiry mentions Ferrito Plastronics, a relatively small Indian company that appears to be offering its services in China. This company is unlikely to have been capable of

manufacturing such a large quantity of magnets. It is unclear from the enquiry if Ferrito Plastronics was responding to the enquiry or if Tamouresi was contacting this company," it said.

Amazon MP3 adds Ford SYNC support for Android, makes you vocalize your bad taste

If we're being honest, many of you probably won't care too much about the latest update to Amazon MP3 for Android. Why? Well, the big new feature is Ford SYNC support, and we're pretty sure that a majority of cars on the road aren't packing the in-dash infotainment system yet. But, it is still quite a popular feature in new Ford vehicles and there's definitely a healthy number of drivers out there eager to put their Amazon music collection just a voice command away while they toil away in rush hour traffic. Version 2.8 of the app also includes the requisite bug fixes and a tweaked store that displays more search results. But we know all you really care about is the ability to tell your car to "play Usher" without feeling judged. Time to celebrate.

Bringing the troops home, but not soon enough

President Obama announced in his State of the Union on Tuesday that over the next year, half of the U.S. combat force in Afghanistan will leave the country: by February 2014, 34,000 out of roughly 68,000 troops will have returned home. It is good news that additional American troops will come home after years of debilitating combat.? And it was gratifying to see the President dedicate time during a key speech to a conflict that has become known as America?s ?forgotten war.?
?
However, the speech is also a reminder that the war is not ending as quickly or as completely as Americans hoped. A year from now, 34,000 troops will remain in combat ? more than when President Obama took office.

Furthermore, the White House has not announced how many soldiers will remain in Afghanistan after the war?s ?official end? in 2014. The president has also been vague about the nature of the post-2014 military mission.
?
All of this means the glass is still half-empty for those eager to see an end to a conflict that has gone sadly adrift.
?
Rather than an accelerated withdrawal, Obama?s maneuver may actually permit the military to keep the bulk of U.S. forces in Afghanistan for most of 2013. The plan allows commanders to determine the pace of the reductions, which means it is likely that most forces will remain in Afghanistan through the end of the 2013 ?fighting season.?
?
Obama?s benchmark allows commanders to continue dragging their feet on troop withdrawals, rather than making the tough, but necessary, decision to move troops out at the ?steady pace? Obama promised in May.

The reluctance to speed up withdrawal is understandable ? with Afghanistan far from stable, and the insurgency resilient, it may seem that we have much work left to do. But the uncomfortable truth is that U.S. efforts to stabilize Afghanistan have failed. There is no indication that those efforts will fare any better in 2013 than they did over the past decade.
?
The Pentagon recently reported that only one of 23 Afghan army brigades can operate without NATO support. And that?s after NATO lowered its readiness requirements for Afghan brigades, because meeting the original standards was too difficult.
?
The Pentagon was also pessimistic about efforts to curb the insurgency, reporting: ?Despite the tactical progress of ANSF-ISAF joint operations, the insurgency remains adaptable with a regenerative capacity.?
?
Our mission has not succeeded. There is no reason to keep thousands of American troops in harm?s way for months or years to come when there is no evidence that this time will make a difference.
?
Indeed, this fruitless effort will continue for years: training the Afghan army and counter-terrorism are the long-term missions that the president outlined for U.S. troops after the war officially ends in 2014. It is questionable whether tens of thousands of troops are needed for these tasks.
?
There is another major question that the president?s speech left unanswered: How many U.S. troops will remain after December 2014, and what will their role be? The public deserves to hear a reasoned explanation of why more American lives should remain at risk, and for how long.
?
In 2010, John McCain criticized Obama?s Afghanistan policy, arguing that the President needed to evaluate ?facts on the ground? when making decisions about troop withdrawals. Here are facts from the ground: the buildup of the Afghan forces is nowhere near on track and the insurgency is strong. Meanwhile, large numbers of American veterans suffer from PTSD, and our military is facing a suicide epidemic.
?
Those are the real facts. We are paying a painfully high cost to keep more troops in Afghanistan for longer ? with few, if any, benefits. The president?s announcement is a step in the right direction, but he needs to do much more to fulfill his promise to end a war that?s gone on for far too long.

Clues to why most survived China melamine scandal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Scientists wondering why some children and not others survived one of China's worst food safety scandals have uncovered a suspect: germs that live in the gut.

In 2008, at least six babies died and 300,000 became sick after being fed infant formula that had been deliberately and illegally tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. There were some lingering puzzles: How did it cause kidney failure, and why wasn't everyone equally at risk?

A team of researchers from the U.S. and China re-examined those questions in a series of studies in rats. In findings released Wednesday, they reported that certain intestinal bacteria play a crucial role in how the body handles melamine.

The intestines of all mammals teem with different species of bacteria that perform different jobs. To see if one of those activities involves processing melamine, researchers from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Shanghai Jiao Tong University gave lab rats antibiotics to kill off some of the germs ? and then fed them melamine.

The antibiotic-treated rats excreted twice as much of the melamine as rats that didn't get antibiotics, and they experienced fewer kidney stones and other damage.

A closer look identified why: A particular intestinal germ ? named Klebsiella terrigena ? was metabolizing melamine to create a more toxic byproduct, the team reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Previous studies have estimated that fewer than 1 percent of healthy people harbor that bacteria species. A similar fraction of melamine-exposed children in China got sick, the researchers wrote. But proving that link would require studying stool samples preserved from affected children, they cautioned.

Still, the research is pretty strong, said microbiologist Jack Gilbert of the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory, who wasn't involved in the new study.

More importantly, "this paper adds to a growing body of evidence which suggests that microbes in the body play a significant role in our response to toxicity and in our health in general," Gilbert said.

White House releases college cost website

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House is releasing a website designed to help college-bound students have a better sense of how much their education will cost and how much they can expect to pay in student loans.

President Barack Obama promised the tool during Tuesday's State of the Union speech and Education Department officials published the data early Wednesday. On the website, potential students and their parents can see a typical student's out-of-pocket costs, as well as what percentage of students graduate.

The searchable database also lets students compare the rates at which graduates default on their student loans against the national average of 13 percent, and how much the typical student pays each month in student loans.

In coming years, the site promises data on how much graduates earn.

LeBron sets mark, Heat top Blazers 117-104

MIAMI (AP) ? It's not the type of streak that LeBron James ever thought about, this run of putting together at least 30 points and 60 percent shooting in six straight games.

Still, it's something he'll savor. He's rolling right now, and so are the Miami Heat.

James scored 30 points on 11 for 15 shooting to get into the NBA record books, Chris Bosh scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the Heat wound up beating the Portland Trail Blazers 117-104 in a wild, momentum-swinging game on Tuesday night.

It was the 1,000th regular-season win in Heat history. But on this night, the only history anyone will remember was what James accomplished.

"I'm at a loss for words," James said in a televised postgame interview. "Like I say over and over, I know the history of the game. I know how many unbelievable players who came through the ranks, who paved the way for me and my teammates. And for me to be in the record books by myself with such a stat ? any stat ? it's big-time."

Dwyane Wade added 24 points for Miami, which wasted a pair of 14-point leads ? then put the game away with a 14-0 run in the final minutes. Ray Allen added 14 for Miami.

Damian Lillard had a game-high 33 points for Portland, which got 29 from LaMarcus Aldridge and 20 from Wesley Matthews.

Just like the Heat, the Blazers also saw a 14-point lead slip away in the game, and then simply got shut down late by a stretch of airtight Miami defense.

"That was typical Miami Heat stuff," Lillard said. "Transition, finishing strong around the rim, and LeBron picking defenses apart."

James has made 66 of his past 92 shots, over the past six games ? and is an absurd 60 for 80, or 75 percent, in his last 188 minutes of court time. According to the Heat, only Adrian Dantley and Moses Malone had done the 30-point, 60-percent streak in five straight outings before James joined their club.

Now he stands alone.

"That's why he is who he is," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "The best player in the game."

Added Wade: "Obviously he is doing something that is amazing and special."

And on a night where the teams took turns putting together big runs, it was the Heat who had the last rally ? ultimately, the last laugh as well.

With the game tied at 99-all, James drove baseline on former Cleveland teammate Sasha Pavlovic for a two-handed slam that he punctuated with a long scream.

The Heat immediately responded. Matthews made a 3-pointer on the next Portland possession to give the Trail Blazers their last lead. Miami scored the next 14 points, and when James got loose for a dunk with 2:38 remaining, history was his ? the first stretch of six straight 30-point games on 60 percent or better shooting in each outing.

"He played a very good basketball game," Spoelstra deadpanned afterward. "That's all you're going to get out of me right now. He competes. He loves to compete. He loves close games. ... And he's leading us, not just with his talent."

Bosh made a jumper with 1:55 left to end the run and seal the win, Miami's sixth straight overall.

Miami next plays Thursday night in Oklahoma City, an NBA Finals rematch before heading into the All-Star break. The Heat topped the Thunder in the first meeting of the clubs this season, winning in Miami on Christmas Day.

"It's a game we'll look forward to," Wade said.

A glance at the halftime boxscore ? Portland 59, Miami 58 ? would have suggested the opening two quarters were closely contested, back-and-forth basketball.

Not exactly.

There were deep and dramatic shifts in momentum, with James and Aldridge simply taking over play for long stretches in the early going.

Miami started with a flurry, hitting its first seven shots and doing so with James collecting five assists in the game's first 3:52. The Heat led 14-5 after that burst, and were still shooting 75 percent with a minute to go in the opening quarter.

They also were trailing at that point. The Blazers were doing anything they wanted on the offensive end.

"I thought it was a good effort by our team," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "Miami's one of the best if not the best team in the league right now and they are playing at a high level. We matched it for about 44 minutes."

More than matched it for a while, too.

Aldridge went on a personal 13-0 run over a stretch of nearly four minutes midway through the half, single-handedly seeming to turn what was a 29-24 Portland deficit into a 37-29 Portland lead. And another quick burst, this time a 10-1 run by the Blazers, gave the visitors what was their biggest lead, 57-43 with 4:48 left in the half.

Take away Miami's sizzling start, and the Blazers outscored the Heat 52-29 over a huge swath of the first half. Of course, by the break, everything looked just about even. James scored 10 points in a 15-2 Miami run to end the half, and the Blazers' lead was down to a single point at intermission.

It wound up as a 34-12 run by the Heat in all, as Miami rebuilt what became a 14-point lead midway through third.

Predictably, the Blazers came back. Lillard scored nine points in the final 4:36 of the third, and the Miami lead was down to 86-82 entering the fourth after James waited too long to shoot a beat-the-clock 30-footer that went in anyway.

But down the stretch, it was all Miami.

"I thought one of the biggest differences were the 50-50 balls," Lillard said. "A few went their way. And they made us pay."

NOTES: It was the 25th time Lillard scored more than 20 points this season, adding to his rookie-of-the-year credentials. ... Aldridge has at least 11 field goals in each of his past five games. ... The Heat were without Mike Miller, the latest victim of the flu bug that has ripped through the locker room, and lost starting forward Udonis Haslem to a lower-leg contusion in the opening quarter. X-rays on Haslem's shin were negative.

Jay, as many of you have guessed, is going to suffer from a bout of heatstroke a day or two in. I don't know how familiar you all are with it, so I'm going to include the symptoms that will be most obvious to the other characters.

Heat Exhaustion- Warning Signs

  • Headaches
  • Cramps/Aches
  • Slightly raised temperature- won't be immediately obvious.
  • Fast, weak pulse.

Heatstroke- This is when it gets serious.
  • Headache worsens, accompanied by dizziness
  • Fast, strong pulse
  • Temperature rises to around 40C/104F
  • Unconsciousness

Treatment
  • If they spot the heat exhaustion, get him to somewhere cool and get him to lie down. He carries slightly salted water with him- get him to drink some. If there's a doctor/medic around, get them to check him over.
  • If it gets to the point of heatstroke, take off as much of his clothes as possible and fan him- using a fan like the one in his pack or using hands. Lay him somewhere cool. Urgent medical assistance is needed.

Chris, as is stated in his first post, is out of meds. His hyperactivity is going to gradually increase, and he's going to become violent at some point. Both are going to worsen unless he gets a drug like Focalin used to treat hyperactivity. He has limited self-control over his violence but none over his hyperactivity.

These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which, as they kiss, consume.

Eric Pang stamps Eric Solagna in 2013 European Mixed Team Championships ? Badminton News

Men?s Singles shuttler Eric Pang employed all of his brilliance on the court and stamped Eric Solagna in a group match of European Mixed Team Championships on February 12, 2013.

This encounter was a part of match between Netherlands and Luxembourg and it lasted for just two games.

The spirited Dutch campaigner did not give his rival even a single chance to proceed and cast him out by registering an impressive result of 21-10 and 21-12 in just 19 minutes.

Eric Pang laid foundation of his supremacy immediately in the opening game and sealed a splendid straight-set victory.

Meanwhile, Eric Solagna failed to employ an effective counterattack strategy and surrendered tamely in both segments of the showdown.

In first set of the match, both contenders challenged each other in the establishing rallies and brought thrill into contest.

However, the story was entirely different in next couple of rallies as Eric Pang bagged many valuable points in a row.

He did not allow his competitor to proceed on the points table and left him far behind with a mountainous figure before interval.

After the mid-game break, Eric showed consistency in his performance and kept his challenger under control.

The Dutch player prevailed in few consecutive rallies and doubled the pressure for opposing shuttler.

Though, the Men?s Singles expert of Luxembourg tried hard to counterbalance the situation but he failed to hit the mark. He had to surrender when scoreboard flashed a final margin of 21-10.

The second set of match was also a sheer disappointment for Eric Solagna as he could not end his bad patch and crashed out in a disgraceful manner.

On the other hand, Eric Pang relished full benefits of his first set win and transformed his 1-0 lead into a straight-set victory.

Initially, he was bit sluggish but then couple of productive rallies provided him the required momentum.

He never looked back after getting on right track. At first, he established an unassailable lead with a convincing total of 11 and then swept the table with an overwhelming score of 21-12.

With this win, he fetched a valuable match point for Netherlands and they registered their presence in this championship.

Marathon record could go in London, says Kipsang

ITEN, Kenya | Wed Feb 13, 2013 5:20pm GMT

ITEN, Kenya (Reuters) - Wilson Kipsang, the 2012 London Marathon winner and Olympic bronze medallist, believes the men's world record could fall when one of the strongest fields ever assembled line up in London in April.

The Kenyan will take on Uganda's surprise Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich, world champion Abel Kirui, fellow Kenyan and Berlin marathon winner Geoffrey Mutai and three-time London winner Martin Lel.

"It's a very strong field with about 10 guys who have run sub 2:05:15. So if they can run freely in a way where there is no fearing one another, I think the record is very possible," Kipsang told Reuters in Iten, a small town 2,400 metres above sea level in western Kenya's Rift Valley.

Kipsang missed the London course record by four seconds when winning last year's race and his marathon best of 2:03.42, set in 2011 in Frankfurt, is four seconds short of Patrick Makau's world record.

"I came very close to breaking the world record. When I see Patrick I always joke with him: 'was it three or four seconds?'," Kipsang laughs, folding his thumb to show four and then three fingers.

Kipsang raced Makau over 42.1km for the first and only time in last year's London marathon but the world record holder limped out after 16km.

The duo will renew their rivalry around the streets of the capital with Kipsang citing the 27-year-old as one of the two biggest obstacles to the defence of his London title.

However, he sees close friend Mutai as the biggest threat.

The 32-year-old clocked the fastest marathon ever in a time of 2:03:02 in Boston in 2011, but the record was not ratified because of the brisk tailwind and because Boston is considered too much of a downhill course.

"We have not met in marathon before but Geoffrey's speed, especially from 30km to 35km, is really good," Kipsang said, minutes after having lunch with Mutai in the garden of his newly opened hotel Keellu, which stands for 'goodluck' in Swahili.

"I don't know how this year will turn out but I think those two are the biggest rivals."

Among the Ethiopians bidding to ensure their east African neighbours do not have it all their own way will be Tsegaye Kebede, who won the 2012 Chicago marathon and the 2010 London race, Ayele Abshero, who won last year's Dubai marathon in the sixth-fastest time ever (2:04.23) and Feyisa Lilesa, another sub-2:05 man.

"A lot will depend on how you feel on the day of the competition," said Kipsang, while pointing out there is little separating the top runners.

On first sight, Kipsang's polished black shoes, smart trousers and neatly pressed shirt would suggest he's just another hotel manager. But the respect and warm embraces afforded to him by the guests highlight his high standing in Iten.

The 30-year-old said this position as the role model to youngsters in the area was now fuelling his ambition - both on track and in his business dealings.

"I enjoy being a role model. I saw putting up a hotel like Keellu as one way of giving back to the community. Yes, it is an investment but it also employs lots of people and helps those who grow food in the area," Kipsang said.

Tea party: ?What America needs is not Robin Hood but Adam Smith?

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (Mark Wilson/Getty Images)

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul accused both Republicans and Democrats of being "guilty of spending too much" in his tea party response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address Tuesday night.

"It is often said that there is not enough bipartisanship up here. That is not true. In fact, there is plenty of bipartisanship," Paul said in a speech for Tea Party Express that streamed live on the group's website shortly after Obama's speech. "Both parties have been guilty of spending too much, of protecting their sacred cows, of backroom deals in which everyone up here wins, but every taxpayer loses."

Despite being an elected member of the Senate, the junior senator from Kentucky at times spoke as though he were an outsider?even using the word "they" when referring to other members of the institution to which he belongs.

Paul delivered his remarks following the official Republican response, given by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio from the capitol. Paul joined Rubio in accusing the president of working to undermine the "free market," but Paul's remarks also included a call for an amendment to the Constitution that would require the federal government to balance its budget every year, a tea party rallying cry.

"What the president fails to grasp is that the American system that rewards hard work is what made America so prosperous," Paul said. "What America needs is not Robin Hood but Adam Smith."

Paul advocated for term limits for members of Congress as punishment for not passing a budget and reining in spending.

"If Congress refuses to obey its own rules, if Congress refuses to pass a budget, if Congress refuses to read the bills, then I say: Sweep the place clean. Limit their terms and send them home," Paul said. "I have seen the inner sanctum of Congress and believe me there is no monopoly on knowledge there. If they will not listen, if they will not balance the budget, then we should limit their terms."

The speech gave Paul, who has said he's thinking about running for president someday, an opportunity to brand himself as an alternative to the party establishment. Because being an outsider, of course, is what being a tea party lawmaker is all about.

Israeli airstrike on Syria shows strategic strength

Since Israel?s brazen airstrike on Syrian territory Jan. 30, Israel?s enemies have yet to retaliate. Syria, Iran, and their proxy, Hezbollah, together comprise the region?s heavily-armed fighting force, and yet remain unwilling to make good on pledges to respond with aggression to any Israeli force.

Even Syria?s enemies have begun to take notice of the nonresponse, exploiting the Assad regime?s inaction for their own propaganda purposes. In Turkey, where relations with Israel are seriously strained, President Ahmet Davutoglu asked: ?Why didn?t [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad even throw a pebble when Israeli jets were flying over his palace and playing with the dignity of his country??

OPINION: Four things Syria must do after Bashar al-Assad

Depending on whom you ask, Israel either hit sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles in Syria that were en-route to the Lebanese border and Hezbollah (this is the US and Israeli explanation), or it hit a symbolic military research center northwest of Damascus (the Syrian version). But at this point, speculation over which targets were hit, where they were located, or what exact purpose they served is irrelevant.

What is relevant, is that Israel clearly retains the strategic high ground against its enemies, with full knowledge that Syria, Iran, and Hezbollah are bogged down in the swamp of civil war, economic sanctions, or diplomatic isolation.

The Israeli strike against Syria has to be looked at in the context of last November?s conflict between Hamas and Israel ? when Hamas fired some 1,500 rockets from the Gaza Strip, including longer range Iranian-made missiles that reached Tel Aviv for the first time. Israel successfully protected itself with its anti-missile system, called Iron Dome. The Syria strike shows that the last round in the Gaza Strip emboldened the Israeli military to go after Hezbollah, a far more fearsome enemy.

Knowing that its Iron Dome system was battle tested, Israel was able to confidently deploy the anti-missile system near Israel?s strategic industrial centers in Haifa prior to the attacks on Syria. Tanks and troops had been moved to the border with Syria, backed by a political establishment that had spent months coordinating with regional and international allies through back channels to gain support for such action.

The Israeli home front meanwhile, had undergone months of emergency drills, siren tests, and disaster planning, all based on pitfalls from the 2006 Second Lebanon War and the 2008-9 Gaza conflict.

THE MONITOR'S VIEW: Obama's hidden nonplan to arm rebels in Syria

Not only does Israel know its own strength, it is well aware of its enemies? weakness. For Hezbollah, times have changed since its glory days in the 2006 Lebanon war. Hezbollah?s leadership knows that a broad conflict with Israel would exact damage on an exponentially higher level than seven years ago, affecting all of Lebanon. Only this time, an increasingly sanctions-hit Iran would be unable to rebuild Lebanon?s infrastructure. And the embattled Assad regime is likely too busy to facilitate the massive smuggling effort that would be needed to restore Hezbollah?s vast arsenal of rockets and missiles.

Both Hezbollah and Israel understand that the Shiite group?s arsenal is its last card in maintaining its future political strength in Lebanon after the eventual fall of its dictatorial uncle, President Assad, next door. That card should not be played unless absolutely necessary.

The Assad regime meanwhile, knows full well that entering into a conflict with Israel would expedite its ousting. For years, the Israeli Air Force has trained for a conflict with Syria, particularly for a lightning campaign to destroy Assad?s air force, long-range artillery, and chemical weapons if needed. Coincidentally, these weapons and units are all that stand in the way of a Syrian rebel military victory against an Army whose ground troops face increasingly severe manpower shortages.

On Feb. 5, Israel bolstered its anti-missile capabilities near the Lebanese border, adding another Iron Dome and Patriot missile battery to its array defenses. Israeli aircraft are patrolling the skies over the Syrian-Lebanese border, scanning and hunting for any signs that Hezbollah may once again be attempting to transfer game-changing weapons into its arsenals. There should be little doubt in anyone?s mind that those pilots are primed to strike Israel?s enemies again and again.

OPINION: Israel's new government could bring shift in policy on Arab Spring and Palestinians

Contrary to their statements, Iran and Syria do not have the ability to respond to Israel?s efforts to curb weapons smuggling to Hezbollah. Apart from dispatching their operatives to bomb a synagogue in Eastern Europe or target an Israeli diplomat in West Africa, there is little Hezbollah, the Assad regime, or Iran can do to retaliate against Israel for its very public power play.

Reproductive workings of a harvester ant dynasty

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Ants are just about everywhere you look, and yet it's largely unknown how they manage to be so ubiquitous. Scientists have understood the carnal mechanism of ant reproduction, but until now have known little of how successful the daughters of a colony are when they attempt to found new colonies.

For the first time, Stanford biologists have been able to identify specific parent ants and their own children in wild ant colonies, making it possible to study reproduction trends.

And in a remarkable display of longevity, an original queen ant was found to be producing new ants several decades after mating, sending out daughter queens throughout her 20- to 30-year lifespan.

"Most animals produce offspring for a while, and then they enter a life stage where they don't," Gordon said. "These queen ants are mating once, storing that sperm in a special sac, keeping it alive and using it to fertilize eggs for another 25 years."

From an ecological viewpoint, an ant colony is much like a tree putting out seeds, with the potential to create new trees. An ant queen produces genetically identical worker ants that live in the same colony, and also produces sons, and daughter queens. The daughter queens, after mating, establish new colonies of their own.

Deborah Gordon, a biology professor at Stanford and a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, has been studying a particular population of harvester ant colonies in southeastern Arizona for 28 years, meticulously recording when a new colony rises or an older one falls.

Gordon's group took the DNA fingerprint of each colony by analyzing a section of microsatellite, or "junk," DNA to identify which colonies were related. By pairing the genetic analysis with the long-term observations, Gordon was able to determine the original queen and colony, and the order in which the daughter queens and subsequent generations established new colonies.

The researchers also found that only about 25 percent of the colonies reproduce at all, and many of the daughter queens are not successful. The entire population -- the study group consisted of about 300 colonies -- relies on just a few queens to make most of the offspring year after year.

"We don't know whether all harvester ant populations always behave this way, or whether these trends hold true for all 11,000 ant species, because nobody has identified colony offspring before," Gordon said. "This gives us new insight on how ant populations change over time."

In general, ants play an important role in agriculture around the world, with some helping to disperse seeds while others eat herbivorous insects. Understanding how populations of ant colonies reproduce and expand, and the rate at which they do so, could be useful in managing invasive ant species, predicting crop yields and understanding the ecology of tropical forests.

"If you're trying to understand how a population grows -- say, you are trying to keep a population of lions going -- the first thing you need to know is how many lionesses you have, and how many cubs they have and can support per year," Gordon said. "For ecological purposes, it's very useful to be able to say how ant populations will grow. This is the first step toward understanding how to predict numbers of ant colonies."

The study was published Jan. 31 in the online version of the Journal of Animal Ecology.

Locals believe bobcat trappers are crossing the line in Joshua Tree

JOSHUA TREE ? Annica Kreuter's backyard on the edge of Joshua Tree National Park has been a perfect place to chronicle the adventures of eight bobcats.

Over the last decade she has watched a young bobcat chased up a tree by a coyote; an alpha male surveying the landscape from the hood of her car; a kitten sauntering into the yard as she gardens; a matron sniffing the back of Kreuter's neck as she napped on a hammock.

Lately, seven of the eight have vanished. "At sunrise, I hear the one that is still here crying for his family," Kreuter said.

She and others in this high desert community of about 8,000 say bobcats have been disappearing lately, killed for the value of their pelts by trappers who often trespass on private property. The trappers come armed with wire cages, squirt bottles of potent scent and bobcat lures: battery-powered vibrating pet toys festooned with feathers to resemble dying birds.

Hunting and trapping bobcats is legal during hunting season outside of the national park boundaries. But to the locals, that makes little difference. "The very idea of trapping in a place where bobcats are so well-known they have nicknames ? Big Gray, Leroy, Tomboy ? is disturbing and heartbreaking," Kreuter said.

As one of the top predators of a 720,000-acre park visited by 1.4 million people each year, the bobcat's presence ? or absence ? has a cascade of consequences, making it a governing force of the ecosystem and the local ecotourism economy. An adult bobcat stands about 15 inches high and can cover 25 to 30 miles of territory in a day. Using razor-sharp claws and powerful legs, it preys on rabbits and makes a significant contribution to rodent control.

Critics believe the trappers are after bobcats that routinely crisscross the invisible park boundary lines.

"This is really, really bad," said astronomer and conservationist Tom O'Key, who was the first to discover a trap. "These guys are carpetbaggers coming onto private land to slaughter bobcats with no regard for a tight-knit community that cares deeply about the national park and its wildlife."

O'Key alerted the community after finding a trap chained to a jojoba bush and camouflaged with broken branches and leaves on his property north of the park. He notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and the Hi-Desert Star newspaper.

Bobcats are being targeted for the value of their pelts in top-dollar markets such as China, Russia and Greece. A premium pelt of heavily spotted white belly fur can earn a trapper more than $600, according to Nathan Brock, who skinned 10 bobcats that he captured in the Joshua Tree area during the hunting season that ended Jan. 31.

Brock, 38, an active-duty Marine stationed at nearby Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, acknowledged that one of his traps was set on private property and not on federal Bureau of Land Management grounds, where trapping is legal. The region is a patchwork of private property and BLM land.

"I feel horrible about that," Brock said. "It's my fault for not making sure."

The manufacturer of Brock's trap, Mercer Lawing of Barstow, said critics miss the point. "We love those animals more than the people who are complaining about us trapping them do," Lawing said. "Nathan and I harvest adult male cats and turn loose adult females and kittens."

The national park has taken a neutral position on the issue, given that its jurisdictional reach extends only as far as its boundaries.

However, park biologist Michael Vamstad said, "Residents have every right to be upset. The fact that there is no limit on bobcats that can be legally taken during hunting season doesn't jibe along the edges of a national park. It's a relic regulation."

Conservationists are calling for a "no-trapping" buffer zone in the area because bobcats travel along a web of interconnected wildlife corridors stretching from the national park to the Marine base about 10 miles to the north.

"The law has to change if it's legal for a handful of people to line the boundary of a national park with traps to catch bobcats, then send their pelts to China for profit," said Brendan Cummings, public lands director for the Center for Biological Diversity. "We are not going to let this happen again."

Equally pointed words came from Nancy Karl, executive director of the Mojave Desert Land Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving safe passage for wildlife between protected areas. "We are watching and paying close attention ? and we are going to change things," Karl said. "Those trappers would be best advised to move it."
